Is it a bad thing if a girl asks a guy to a "guy's choice" dance?

i asked the guy i like to homecoming even though it was guy's choice but i only did it because he couldn't pluck up his own courage to ask me (although i've seen him attempt it countless times). instead of saying 'yes' like i presumed him to say (along with his friends) he rejected me. i've been really self-conscious about it, but i've heard of other girls asking guys to 'guy's choice' dances & they all say yes... & i was really confused since i've heard from his Friends that he was going to ask me anyway... did i just commit some social sin that i'm not aware of?
ever since he rejected me his Friends have stopped talking to him & hanging around him yet they all give me pity looks (they're not very sympathetic people either, so it's kind of strange). i've also heard the guy i asked talking to a bunch of other popular girls saying things rhetorically like "what do anda think of a guy who tried COUNTLESS TIMES in asking a girl to a dance, & she can go ahead & do it ONCE without fail?"
sorry for the bad explanation... but i'm feeling really self-conscious about this every time i walk into my school. is it a bad thing if a girl asks a guy to a "guy's choice" dance (& vice versa if a guy asks a girl to a "girl's choice" dance?)
