They have to be an actual couple. The couple who I think are meant to be is Sun and Nagasumi from "My Bride is a Mermaid". They met when Sun saved Nagasumi from drowning so their meeting was fate and even with Sun's dad and others constantly trying to kill Nagasumi, Sun and Nagasumi seem to get through everything together. They obviously care about each other very much. One example to tunjuk just how much Sun cares about Nagasumi was in the episode "Monitory Report" when she was crying and thinking to herself "If I flunk the mermaid exam I'll get sent back to Seto and poor Nagasumi will be left here all alone." One example of just how much Nagasumi cares about Sun was in the episode "The Running Man" when Nagasumi did whatever he could to keep Kai away from Sun. These two may have had their ups and downs, and a massive fight in the saat to last episode of the series, but in the series finale Nagasumi rescued Sun and they both apologized to each other and hugged each other close despite the fighting going on around them.
