Chapter 12
Booth and Brennan both walked into her cabin. She got Booth to turn it on while she got them a drink. Brennan was about to turn on web cam when Booth tapped her shoulder and said,
“You might be interested in cleaning up first.”
Brennan suddenly remembered what she looked like. Her hair was a mess and dried blood stuck to the side of her face.
“Right.” She got up and walked into her bathroom. Booth sat outside on the sofa, kerusi panjang and stared at the blank computer screen. Then he leaned over and turned it on himself only to find Angela and Hodgins talking on the couch.
“...don’t tell Booth and Brennan.” Angela was saying.
“Don’t tell Booth and Brennan what?” Booth asked.
The sound made them both jump. They looked at the computer screen.
“Nothing.” They berkata at the same time.
“Oh, anda turned it on.” Came Brennan’s voice from behind Booth. Then she came and sat seterusnya to him. “Hey.” She berkata to the others.
Angela and Hodgins smiled squeamishly at each other. “I got to go.” Hodgins berkata as he quickly disappeared from sight.
“What’s with the smile? Don’t tell Booth and Brennan what!?” Booth whined at Angela.
“Huh?” Brennan asked.
“Don’t worry sweetie, now, how’s the case?”
Brennan told Angela everything. Halfway through, Booth got bored and went to watch TV.
“Oh my gosh! anda were attacked? Are anda okay?”
“I’m fine Ange, really, thanks to Booth.” She looked over from the dapur meja, jadual into the other room where he sat watching the Simpsons. She smiled to herself and forgot about Angela until she said,
“Awww! My little Brennan’s getting a crush!”
Brennan lowered her voice “No I’m not! It’s time for dinner, Bye!”
“Sweetie, it’s only six o’clock......” Brennan shut the laptop.
She went outside and sat down on the hammock that hung from two trees seterusnya to the veranda. She was watching the sun set when Booth came and sat beside her.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
“Nothing, I just wanted to watch the sun set.”
“Oh, okay.” He said. He layed on his back looking at the clouds
“Look, Bones, maybe we should hand over the case to someone else. That guy will diffidently kill anda seterusnya time. What if comes after anda again?”
“Then you’ll be there to rescue me.” She berkata quietly.
Her reply made him smile. He couldn’t contain it.
“You trust me that much?” he asked.
She nodded and said, “Yes, I do.” Then she layed down beside him and rested her head on his shoulder. Booth felt warmth flood trough him. He loved her touch. They stayed there until the sun set behind the snow covered mountains.
“It’s getting cold now.” Brennan said, sitting up.
“Yeah.” He sat up too. “Do anda want dinner, Cause I don’t.”
“No thanks, I’ll pass tonight.”
Brennan stood up and walked towards the cabin. She was about to go in when Booth said,
“Bones, dose your heating work?”
She turned around. “Yes, Why?”
“Just asking, because mine’s broken.” He looked like a begging dog waiting to be offered food.
She just looked at him.
“And it’s cold.” He carried on, trying to give a hint.
Still a blank stare.
“Really cold.”
“Oh, right.” She finally took the hint, “Booth, would anda like to stay here for tonight because your heating’s broken?”
“Yes, very much!” he squeezed past her into the warm room and flopped on the couch. “Thought you’d never ask.”
She rolled her shook her head. “Don’t anda want a blanket atau something?”
“There’s one here.” He held up a blue cover.
“Okay, Night.” She walked into the bedroom and closed the door behind her.
Booth pulled off his shoes and jaket and stretched out on the couch. His mind was jumbled with thoughts. What would he do if something happened to Bones? No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t block that thought. He didn’t want to think how sad he’d be. It kept bugging him until eventually, his eyes grew heavy and he fell asleep.
Chapter 13
Brennan woke up early and quickly threw on a white singlet over her black and red bra. Only half awake, she strode out into the kitchen, opened the fridge and grabbed the milk. When she closed the door she found Booth staring at her with a surprised expression on his face. She quickly grabbed the newspaper she left on the side and held it to her chest. How could she forget about Booth!
“What are anda doing here?” she knew why.
“You let me stay here.” His voice seemed fearful.
“Oh.”
There was an awkward silence.
“I’m going to get dressed.” Brennan said. Still holding the newspaper, she walked back to her room.
“Mmmm.” Was all Booth said. He actually didn’t mind her looking like that. He didn’t know why. He decided to go to see Starling. He was grooming the horse when Brennan came in, this time wearing jeans and a light blue skin tight baju, blaus that showed off her figure perfectly.
That’s when it hit Booth. He liked her! Nerves flooded through him. ‘What was I meant to be doing again? Oh right, grooming the horse.’ he thought.
Brennan grabbed a brush and walked up seterusnya to Booth. jalak, burung perling turned his head to look at her and snorted. Brennan quickly took a step back.
“Don’t be mean.” Booth scolded him. The horse turned its head and nudged Brennan.
“How do anda get him to listen to you? He hates everyone else unless anda tell him to like them.” She joined in brushing the animal.
Booth thought for a second, “I don’t know.” He stopped and put down the brush. “Okay, saddle up Dawn and we’ll go look at the body one last time, so anda can do your bone thing.”
“It’s called an examination. And how do anda know the way?”
“Because I found this!” he held up the map. “In your cabin. So I didn’t lose it, anda did! Huh!” he had a satisfied smile.
“I didn’t lose it! I knew where it was, I just forgot for a while.”
“And I bet anda don’t know how to tack up.”
“I do too.” She grabbed the saddle that he was holding and walked towards Dawn.
“That’s the wrong saddle Bones.”
She stopped doubled back and got the right one. The look on her face was priceless. Booth just laughed and turned to take care of Starling. After he was done he went to cheek on Bones to see how she was doing. She was fiddling with the kekang, bridle and had no idea what so ever.
“Come here.” He berkata as he took the saddle.
“I don’t need help.”
“Yes, anda do.”
He was done in a few minutes.
“Did they even tell anda how to do this?” he asked her when he was done.
“Jay did it for me.”
Booth gave her a look.
“What?” she asked nothing
“Typical.” Was his reply. Then he handed her the reins and went to get Starling.
In a few hours, they were in town. Brennan went to fix the lapor on the body and Booth wandered off to do his own thing. An jam later they met back in front of the sheriff’s office and started the ride back. They were riding along until the path came to a fork and Booth turned jalak, burung perling to face Brennan and Dawn.
“Tony berkata that this trail went to the bahagian, atas of the ridge over there. It’s meant to be a nice view. So do anda want to go?”
“Yes.” She nudged Dawn forwards past jalak, burung perling who charged after her. He didn’t like being behind, he like to lead. Booth held him back though. He had a perfect view of Brennan from here and he wasn’t going to move. They finally came out of the forest and into a clearing where they could see everything. The Mountains in the distance, the ranch, the open fields and something else.
“Booth, that doesn’t look good.” Her voice was worried and she was pointing to some huge dark clouds rolling over the peaks of the mountains. A chilling wind blew.
“No, it doesn’t. We have to get back right now.” He turned jalak, burung perling and nudged him into a trot. Dawn struggled to keep up with the stallions fast pace.
“Booth! Slow down, those clouds are miles away.” Brennan yelled from a few meters back.
“That storm looks bad. It could be here in 20 minit and we’re not going to be standing around in it.”
“What’s wrong with a bit of rain?” she asked doubtfully. Booth stopped fully. He turned and said, “It’s not just a bit of rain, Bones. Storms up here are like cyclones. Except the rain is as cold as ice and after there’s fog so thick anda could walk off a cliff and not know it till anda hit the ground.”
“Oh.”
“So hurry up.”
They made record time and were back as it started to rain. Booth led jalak, burung perling into the barn, then went back to help Brennan with Dawn, who refused to go in. With an extra push, they managed to get her moving. As they led their Kuda to their stables, Brennan noticed a stall door was open.
She tugged his sleeve to get his attention and pointed towards the open door. Booth quickly tied up the horses, then he grabbed his gun and walked towards the door. He quickly glanced at Brennan who was in position to itik from gunfire. With a hard kick, he sent the door flying into the dinding with a bang to reveal a very startled Genevieve leaning against her horse Bow. He lowered his gun.
“What are anda doing here?” Brennan and Booth asked at the same time.
“I live here.” She was still in shock, but she could still be cocky.
“No, what are anda doing here? As in, here, in the stable?”
“I saw the storm and came to cheek on the horses.” She stood up and wrapped her arms around Bow’s neck.
“Is anyone else here?” Brennan asked.
“No. They all wanted to stay in the city for another week. I wanted to come back. And, guess what. Our great aunt is fine. She’s not dead. Someone sent us a prank note. And I got a letter from anda two saying anda wanted me here.”
“We didn’t send anda a letter.”
Booth and Brennan looked at each other. They knew what had happened. Booth quickly grabbed Genevieve and followed Brennan to the house.
“Hello? What’s happening?! This isn’t cool.” Booth dropped her on the sofa, kerusi panjang and Brennan locked the door.
“Booth, that man knew we were here all along. He sent the letter to Sam saying his aunt had died to get them out of the way. He’s trying to destroy all the evidence. Me, because I’m the body examiner, he tried to get back the pisau and now he’s having a go at Gen.” They both looked at the fourteen tahun old girl who sat on the sofa, kerusi panjang watching them.
“What does she have to do with this?” Booth asked Brennan.
“I don’t know.” They were whispering so Genevieve couldn’t hear them.
The rain outside got heaver and lightning lit up the sky. They both turned towards Genevieve who looked confused. After explaining everything to her, Booth asked,
“Do anda know why he’s interested in you?”
A pitiful look came over her face. She sighed and began her story.
“It was about midnight and I snuck out to ride Bow. I climbed out my window and down the pokok just seterusnya to the roof. While I was at the bahagian, atas of the pokok though, I saw someone else walk below me. I stopped and stayed quiet because he stopped and looked around. I didn’t see his face, there were too many shadows. He walked towards the kabin where that girl was staying. She was only going to stay one night, then she had to be on her way. When the girl had arrived she seemed scared and in a rush, like she was running away from something.” Booth and Brennan glanced at each other, then listened as Genevieve went on, “I followed him and he quietly broke into the kabin where she stayed. Then I looked in the window, and, the only thing I saw was her dropping to the ground and the man standing over her. I quickly ducked down in the bushes. I went back to look again to make sure I wasn’t imagining it, and...” her breathing got heavier. She stopped.
“It’s okay. He’s not here now, you’re okay.” Booth words seemed to comfort her a bit, because she nodded. Taking a deep breath, she continued,
“I looked up to see and there he wasn’t there. I kept looking for a moment, but gave up. Then I turned around, and there he was. He just stood there! Like a statue he must of only been about one foot away from me. I didn’t scream, I just ran. For a while, I heard footsteps behind me. Then I ran into the forest. He didn’t know it as well as I did, plus, it was dark, so he fell behind. I managed to climb a tree. He didn’t know where I went. So he stopped. I could hear him saying, ‘come out kid. I know you’re here.’ But I didn’t. The good thing was I knew exactly where I was. I could hear his footsteps crunching the leaves on the ground. Walking back was out of the question, he’d hear me. So I climbed my way back. Through the trees. There was enough moonlight for me to see so I managed to get back undetected as well. I ran to my house and climbed back in my room. The seterusnya day, the body was found. I took Bow for a ride, as I usually do and I look for the man, but I couldn’t find him. Which was good. So here I am today.”
Booth stood up. “You’re a smart kid, Genevieve. Don’t forget that.”
She smiled happily.
“You know how to handle being chased. anda took him into your territory that anda know best and Lost him there. You’re better than half of my old army team. I’ll consider anda as a trainee.” He continued.
“Really?” Brennan and Gen berkata at the same time.
“Yes.” he was serious. The biggest smile came across her face.
“But right now, we need to keep anda safe. Which means no leaving here without telling us, okay?”
“Okay.” She nodded. Brennan stood and followed Booth out of the room.
“Why didn’t she tell anyone?” Brennan asked
“Because she didn’t want to bring it up.” Booth replied
“What?”
“She was too scared, anda heard her. She didn’t want that so she kept it to herself.”
“Do anda think she needs counselling?”
“No, she’s smart enough to handle it herself.”
“Okay.”
They stayed in the main house with Genevieve that night, who decided it would be fun to stay up and watch horror films all night. Booth was on one end of the couch, Brennan on the other. But sejak halfway through the film they were right seterusnya to each other. A sudden on screen movement made Booth jump, which made Brennan jump. sejak the end of the film they were centimetres apart. Horrified looks occupied their faces. Even for Booth, that was the scariest film he’d ever watched. Brennan on the other hand, didn’t see the sense in being scared.
“It’s just a film.” she said. At that moment a huge roll of thunder hit and shocked her. She toppled off the sofa, kerusi panjang and fell on the floor. Genevieve cracked up laughing. Booth pulled her up and smiled.
“Sure, it’s just a film.” He teased. Brennan rolled her eyes and sat back. Genevieve put on another one, but Booth and Brennan fell asleep after about fifteen minit though. It was twelve o’clock and they were tired. The last thing Brennan remembered was the sound of the TV and the feeling of her head on Booth’s shoulder.
