'The League' alum Jason Mantzoukas joins S3 cast of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine'

’s resident love birds Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero) are about to face a big test in their relationship: During Tuesday’s episode, the dynamic duo will go on their very first vacation together as a couple. Twist: They’re not alone!

“They go on their first vacation into international waters, where Jake has no power of arrest, and who should they find there but the Pontiac Bandit [Craig Robinson],” executive producer Dan Goor teases. “It’s a test, but at the end of the day, they’re both cops. And at the end of the day, the most charming man on earth is the Pontiac Bandit, so there’s a lot of fun to be had with his relationship to Jake, him wooing Amy and the whole triangle.”

While Samberg adds that “it definitely impedes on the romance,” the actor notes that Amy understands how vital it is for Jake to finally catch the Pontiac Bandit during the cruise. “She gets it. It’s his Moriarty!”  

Their adventure on the high seas will actually lead to a big moment for the couple. “There’s a turning point in their relationship coming,” Goor says. “Things step up to the next level, but there are still many levels to go.” Adds Samberg: “They definitely open up to each other. They say things to each other they haven’t said before.”

The couple will continue taking steps toward a lasting relationship when Jake introduces Amy to his mother, Karen Peralta (Katey Sagal), in next week’s episode. “Amy is appropriately nervous about it, and has compiled a research binder that rivals what she’d do for a stakeout or undercover work,” Goor teases.

close. “We learn a little more about their dynamic in a really nice way, specifically to do with how much Jake feels the need to protect his mom,” Samberg says. “He finds out how much he doesn’t know about her.”

Here’s what you need to know about her: “She is a public school art teacher, whose head is a bit in the clouds,” Goor reveals. “We feel that, at least in her mind, the reason Jake became a cop was because he was so busy protecting her. They have a lovely relationship, but she’s a strong woman. She has a real great birthday surprise for Jake.”

The birthday surprise comes in the form of Jake’s estranged father, Roger (Bradley Whitford). “They’ve started dating again,” Goor teases. “She’s giving him a second chance because Jake convinced him, in the his last episode, that he was a selfish jerk and needed reforming. In a way, it’s all on Jake.”
