Deadpool: Who Is Negasonic Teenage Warhead (And The Actress Who Portrays Her)?
Happy 2016 everyone! The new year is finally here, and I couldn\'t be more excited for it!
Now that we\'ve all gotten back from our insanely awesome New Years celebrations (me and Netflix had a great time), it\'s time to take some time to appreciate what really makes 2016 so special—Deadpool!
Deadpool movie is coming out in February of this year! As a huge fan, I\'m excited to see the \'Merc with a Mouth\' finally get what he deserves—an R-rated live-action extravaganza!
Even though this technically isn\'t Deadpool\'s first venture on the big screen, it\'s the only one that matters! 20th Century Fox is pulling out all the stops for this one! Trash-talking Wade Wilson (portrayed expertly by Ryan Reynolds)? Check!
An appearance from Colossus, one of the coolest X-Men ever? Check! A sidekick for D-pool in the form of the fiery and gothic Negasonic Teenage Warhead? Check!....Wait, who?
It may sound like some rad metal band, but Negasonic Teenage Warhead is actually the name of the mysterious mutant who accompanies Wade and Colossus in
After all, you didn\'t think that Deadpool would be alone for this would you? Of course not! Deadpool\'s first big screen adventure is the perfect opportunity to introduce fans to the darker and more obscure side of the X-Men universe.
But even so, Negasonic Teenage Warhead? That\'s about as dark and obscure as you can get. The makers of Deadpool must have journeyed deep into the pages of the comics to find this super-powered gem! Since I\'m looking forward to Deadpool more than any other superhero movie this year, I of course wanted to be educated about Deadpool\'s tweet-savvy sidekick- so I decided to do a bunch of comic book research before the film premieres. And now, even though I\'m no comic book historian, I\'ve decided to share my knowledge with you!
So, First Off, Who Exactly Is Negasonic Teenage Warhead?
That dark-shaded character that looks like she\'s straight from the sketchbook of Tim Burton is Negasonic Teenage Warhead! Debuting in the world of Marvel Comics in 2001, Negasonic\'s real name is Ellie Phimister, an angst-ridden teen from Genosha!
Comic book fans may recognize Genosha as the fictional country from the Marvel Universe. Genosha started out as a country occupied by an upper class society who treated mutants are slaves. Eventually, the oppressive Genoshan government was toppled thanks to the help of the X-Men—and Magneto assumed leadership of the small country.
During his reign, Magneto made Genosha a mutants-only nation, and transformed it into a safe haven for young mutants such as Ellie.
A student of Emma Frost, Ellie bonded with the telepathic mutant and learned how to control her own abilities. What abilities were those? Well for one thing, she too has telepathic powers- or at least one would assume, since she was in Emma Frost\'s telepathy class. But it isn\'t known for sure what her powers really were.
You see, Ellie was one of the many mutants to die during the invasion of Cassandra Nova and her army of giant Sentinels. Genosha was reduced to rubble, and several mutants (including Ellie) went down in battle trying to protect it.
It appears that she also had the ability to see into the future, as she mentioned having tons of nightmares about the destruction of Genova before it even happened. It\'s assumed that her precognitive powers are limited to seeing only future disasters and tragic moments—which would explain her angsty personality.
Unfortunately, her visions came true, and Genova was destroyed. Despite Emma Frost\'s best efforts, Negasonic couldn\'t be saved. She would have stayed dead too, if it weren\'t for the fact that this is comics. The only people that stay dead in comics are Uncle Ben and...no wait, that\'s pretty much it. Pretty much every wise mentor in pop culture named Ben has a death wish.
Luke Skywalker feels your pain man...
Negasonic did return eventually, as a member of the nefarious Hellfire Club- along with Cassandra Nova and Emma Frost. She fought the X-Men and faced off against Kitty Pryde- causing her to uncontrollably phase through the ground by saying she predicted it would happen.
Negasonic was "killed" by Cyclops with a pistol. However, it\'s revealed that Negasonic- and the other members of the Hellfire Club- were all just illusions brought about by Emma\'s telepathic mind.
It turns out that an attack on Emma\'s subconscious by Cassandra Nova caused her to create the illusions. Now, you might be wondering how telepathic illusions could possibly fight real people, seeing as how they are illusions. There\'s a simple answer to your quarries, one I use all the time; comics!
Negasonic did make an official reappearance in 2009, when she was resurrected by the mutant Selene, along with several other fallen mutants. This didn\'t last long it seems, as Selene absorbed the souls of deceased mutant population of Genosha.
That\'s really all there is to know about Negasonic Teenage Warhead! She\'s a mysterious Genoshan teenager who unfortunately has experienced a whole lot of dark times. Then again, which X-Men character hasn\'t?
But wait, there\'s one more thing I neglected to mention you say? What could I have possibly left out?
Oh yeah, her absolute mouthful of a name! Now, the X-Men section of the Marvel Universe is home to quite a few odd sounding characters. Maggot, Toad...Doop. Heck, even DEADPOOL is a weird name when you think about it!
But at least those names had at least a little to do with the character\'s powers or personality. Ellie Phimister has got the Teenage part down, but I wouldn\'t blame you if you couldn\'t see the Negasonic or Warhead in her.
As it turns out, NTW\'s name doesn\'t really have anything to do with her powers. In fact, the only reason she\'s called that is because her creator, Grant Morrison, is a fan of music.
That\'s right, Negasonic Teenage Warhead owes her incredibly odd name to a song by the band Monster Magnet. Released in 1995, \'Negasonic Teenage Warhead\' became Monster Magnet\'s first successful single- and their most popular song to date.
Grant Morrison must have been a pretty big fan of the song to name one of his characters after it. Let\'s just be glad he wasn\'t a bigger fan of \'Stoned Soul Picnic\' by The 5th Dimension...
Okay, NOW that\'s all there really is to know about Negasonic Teenage Warhead! All in all, she\'s an incredibly mysterious character and was part of a pretty huge X-Men story- despite not being in it for very long.
But before I end this article with the usual \'Thanks For Reading\' and invite you to join MP as a Creator (you totally should by the way), there\'s still just one more Negasonic related subject I need to talk about; the actress who portays her.
Brianna Hildebrand, the 19-year-old actor who this February will be bringing Negasonic Teenage Warhead to the big screen for the first time! Actually, now that I think about it, this will be the first time NTW has been on any sized screen. I suppose that makes it easier, since she doesn\'t really have any shoes to fill in.
Just like her character, Brianna is fairly unknown- and there aren\'t a ton of acting credits to her name. But just while she might be an unknown, that doesn\'t mean the actress doesn\'t have what it takes to play Deadpool\'s angsty fellow mutant!
Brianna\'s first acting credit is as Jen in a web series called
Annie Undocumented. The series follows Annie, a 16-year-old girl whose life is turned completely upside down when she discovers that she\'s an undocumented immigrant. You can watch the first part of the series below if you\'d like. It\'s a pretty good web show—good enough to win the award for \'Best Web Series\' at the New York TV Festival!
Besides Annie Undocumented, Brianna has appeared in two series in 2015; Prism and The Voice Inside. Prism is about a man named Bryan, whom after coming into contact with his amnesiac father, sets out on a journey to discover what happened during the fifteen years his father was missing.
The Voice Inside is another short web show, revolving around two pen pals who meet at last. The pen pals- one a teenage girl, and the other a violent felon- go for a walk in the woods, but only one walks out.
Besides these acting credits, Brianna also has a producing credit to her name, as she produced the aforementioned short The Voice Inside—as well as starring in it! That\'s all for her previous acting credits, but Brienna has two upcoming credits that should absolutely be acknowledged! The first is obviously Deadpool, but the next is a dramatic indie film titled First Girl I Loved.
First Girl I Loved revolves around 17-year-old Anne Santos, a girl who\'s certain that she\'s a lesbian—though she\'s never really told anyone about it or fallen in love with another girl. Soon after hanging out with the most popular girl in school, Sasha Basanez (Hildebrand), Anne starts to have a crush on her.
She tells her best friend, Clifton, about her feelings towards Sasha. But unbeknownst to her, Clifton has had feelings of his own for Anne—and will do anything to get in the way of her and Sasha\'s relationship.
First Girl I Loved will first premiere this year at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival!
So there you have it, everything you need to know about Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Brianna Hilderbrand! You can catch Brianna as NTW this February when
