Disney Parents Just Don’t Understand

Whether it was begging your parents for a second ear piercing or trying to stay out past curfew as an angsty teen, we all remember what it felt like when our parents just didn’t get it. Naturally, Disney parents are the same way. Here are a few instances we’ve identified. We suggest shouting “You’re ruining my life!” and slamming the door to your bedroom before you sit down to read this:

Simba: Everything the light touches … but what about that shadowy place?

Mufasa: That’s beyond our borders. You must never go there, Simba.

Mufasa: There’s more to being a king than getting your way all the time.

Akin to having to be home by curfew, or being told you can’t go to that concert by yourself, Simba was definitely not allowed to go to the dark shadowy place. Way to be a bore (and also 100% right), Mufasa.

Ariel: I’m sixteen years old. I’m not a child anymore.

Triton: Don’t you take that tone of voice with me, young lady. As long as you live under my ocean, you’ll obey my rules!

Triton: Not another word! And I am never, never to hear of you going to the surface again. Is that clear?

“But Daaaaad. I just want to see what’s out there.” We feel your pain, Ariel, although siding with a sea witch over your well-meaning father maybe isn’t the best decision. It all worked out in the end, though. Phew!

Fa Zhou: I know my place! It is time you learned yours.

does tug at our heartstrings. Mulan just wants to protect her father, but he doesn’t want to put her in danger. They both want the same thing for each other! They’ll soon find out that Mulan is much stronger than either realized.

Princess Jasmine: I’ve never even been outside the palace walls.

Princess Jasmine: Then maybe I don’t wanna be a princess anymore.

Well played, Jasmine. In our angsty adolescent days, we may have pulled the “I never asked to be born!” card, but it’s only because we didn’t have princess credentials at our disposal.

Pocahontas: We don’t have to fight them! There must be a better way.

A powerful dad and a strong-willed daughter are quite the combination. By falling for John Smith, Pocahontas really complicates things for herself and Powhatan. But it’s her open heart that ultimately leads her father and the settlers to peace.

Much like Mulan, Belle wants to protect her father at all costs, even if it means staying in a huge creepy castle with only a hairy beast for company for the rest of her days. Now that’s a sacrifice.

Jane Porter: And I was saved. I was saved by a flying, wild man in a loincloth.

Professor Porter (wrongly) assumes Jane is making up wild stories for attention. Turns out she actually did see a wild man in a loincloth. Jane: 1. Dad: 0.

Pinocchio: We won’t need it. We’re getting out!

Pinocchio is like, “Hey dad! I have a plan to get us out of this whale’s stomach.” And his dad is like, “But what will we sit on?” Come on, Geppetto, keep up. You’re the human in this situation and you’re not even following. This is problematic on many levels.

Tiana: [Showing Eudora the decrepit warehouse she plans to buy] Just look at it, mama! Don’t it just make you wanna cry?

Sometimes it’s hard to envision someone else’s dream, and it takes a little faith to see it from another’s perspective. Even though Tiana sees what the warehouse could become, Eudora knows she needs to offer her daughter a practical perspective. But sometimes, you’ve gotta dream big.

Mr. Darling is a very practical man who intends to raise a very practical daughter. He certainly doesn’t want his daughter planting silly stories in the heads of her siblings. Unfortunately, a flying boy in green tights from a magical land may throw a wrench in that plan.

Mrs. Potts: Now Chip, I won’t have you making up such stories. Now into the tub.

It’s hard to believe that a girl would stay in that castle on her own accord, so we have to side with Mrs. Potts on this one. Sorry, Chip, you were right but the story

Rolly: I’m hungry, Mother. I’m hungry.

Perdita: Now Rolly, you’ve just had your dinner.

Rolly: But I am, just the same. I’m so hungry I could eat a … a whole elephant.

We feel the same way, Rolly. We feel the same way. At the end of the day, the love runs deep between the Disney parents and their kids.
