It's always bothered me when people bring up POC and the Disney Princesses. They argue that there's 13 princesses and only 4 princesses are POC, which is 31%, but once you eliminate Elsa (or Anna, but they are sisters, so it's natural that if one is one color, the other will be the same), that's 33%, and if you remove the Classic Princesses (they were made at a very different time when the USA was still very racist), that brings it down to 4 out of 9, which is almost half. Even when you break that down further, Elsa (or Anna) is Norwegian, Ariel is Danish, Belle is French, Rapunzel is German, and Merida is Scottish. So, there argument is pointless in my honest opinion and quite stupid.

I have many mixed feelings on this let me....just give me a minute.

EDIT:Yeah! But I can see how they would want more PoC my BFF is PoC and she wants a princess of her race just so she can think her race is pretty, amazing and well....a heroine. Is that so bad? I see both sides of this argument both being the fairytales are from Europe but also PaTF was originally Danish but...it takes place in America as an African American Princess sooo really they have a point ...plus they only get 1 of each race sooooo. Plus don't just say because it was in the 1930's -60's it still doesn't give a valid reason why most of the DPs are white...or Heroines for that matter. I all counts the same 4/13 that's the ratio no matter what and I support my BFF in her belief of more PoC princesses. ThOUGH I MUST STRESS!!! I DONT CARE WHAT THE RACE IS. But then again this is coming from the average white girl...idk what PoC actually think about it but I just think they do have a point....non the less I hope that made sense

They do need more PoC I'm not going to lie...they really do

There are already eleven princesses. With Anna and Elsa, 13. There is also Moana, 14, and maybe one from Giants, right? So... that would be 15. And Moana is going to be a POC and maybe the princess from Giants (if there is one) is going to be latina (I don't know).

So that would make:

White princesses: 5 (excluding Walt's princesses and only counting Anna & Elsa as one, because they're sisters).

POC: 6 (or 5, I don't know much about Giants, so I can't tell for sure).

Without excluding Walt's princesses and counting Anna and Elsa as two it would be:

White: 9
POC: 6

Seems pretty equal to me. People, Disney can't represent every race in the planet. They're trying to change it, but not every Disney female character can be an official princess: heck, there are some who are in the lineup who I would remove. What they can do is teach girls you don't have to look like a princess to be one. What counts is being kind, thoughtful, respectful, etc.

Also, I really hate when someone says that they want a princess who looks like them or is their race..honestly shouldn't it be what's on the inside that counts more? I'm a guy, so there's never going to be a princess that looks like me XD but I could care less because although I'm a white male I really relate to Mulan and Pocahontas. Also, we might be getting an Italian princess in 2016 (Giants-Angelica) and a Polynesian(?) princess in 2018 (Moana-Moana).

^but it's understandable! Idk I'm not a PoC so I wouldn't know how they feel. I have princesses that look like me. But I also relate to Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana etc. again I know that if it was reversed and all the DPs were Asian or Black, but only one White girl I might get a little upset...I told you I have mixed feelings on the subject I don't think race matters but...

It's not like I beg and rant for a POC. As long as the princess has good internal values, morals, and personality, I don't really mind. It's not like Disney doesn't have any POCs.. I agree with what Dylan and Gus said also. I see where you are coming from, Olivia, though.

I really think the princesses could be a little more diverse....after all, a VERY small fraction of the planet is white. We have yet to have an African princess, a Hispanic princess, an Australian aboriginal princess, a princess from the Indian subcontinent, etc. Not to mention a plus sized princess, a gay princess, etc.

^Disney can't have all kind of races in the lineup. There would be 100 princesses. I don't mind having POC, of course, but there is already too many princesses, which is the reason I think sixteen princesses are enough.

If you can name multiple princesses of European descent but only one princess of each of their respective racial heritages (only one princess of Asian, African, Native American descent, Middle Eastern, etc.) then yes, there is an imbalance.

I don't think their should be an obese princess. If princesses are role models, being unhealthy shouldn't be one. A curvier woman that is more realistic would be totally fine! I wouldn't mind a lesbian princess, but I don't think the world is quite ready for that unfortunately.. /: ^^

I was speaking to Felipe, in case you couldn't tell. :p

i feel that maybe Angelina would be curvier since she will be Italian, Annika so ur right. and i feel they should, not to look like me but just to show more diversity. not every race but at least some. im actually mixed if you didnt know. i have always thought a mixed princess would be fine, but not for my benefit. and i also agree with tyger eyes. i honestly dont care, i just thought about it now. I think Disney makes a princess who they think girls would like and they make what they think sells. but i feel maybe Angelina and Moana ( who will be POC) is good enough.

It's only fair for there to be more PoC princesses ...and I rather have 1,000 princesses of all different races then 11 princesses with only 4 princesses that aren't white...I already have my race in a princess, so why not PoC...I don't take it to the extreme because I don't care about race but if they want PoC princesses they deserve PoC. Just saying.

Oh, btw I was texting my friend (Sarah) and she said "I think it's messed up we have multiple white princesses that all look the same, but only 1 princess of each minority never mind we don't even have a Latina princess."

Her words not mine, I could care less about what color their skin is, not trying to seem racist here.

*Shrug* I don't think my answer is quite what the question was getting at, but whatever. Ultimately, what I care about is that the princesses are good characters and the movies are good stories. What I really want is Disney to make films based on stories from all different cultures. However, with the current climate in the media about different races and ANY little thing (like, say, the name Maddy) being twisted into something racist by factions out there and the backlash Disney got when making PATF, I can see why it would be considered to risky. A bit ironic, really. But I really do want Disney to adapt more non-European fairy tales.
On a separate but related note, my favorite princesses as a little girl were Mulan and Pocahontas- not the princesses which looked like me. But then again, I'm white, so say what you like.

If Mulan didn't exist, I probably wouldn't have cared that there wasn't an Asian Princess, in all honesty. But obviously things would be very different without her for me xD I still like European fairy tales and Disney doesn't have to please everyone.

I pretty much agree with rhythmicmagic, I don't care if princess is POC or not but I want to see non-European movies.

I don't agree with people who say Disney should make nothing BUT PoC princesses from now on, and that representation is the most important thing and more important than personality and stories. However, there are more than twice as many caucasian princesses, and there are stories to be told outside of Europe. Like rythmicmagic, my main concern for the Europe-centricness of Disney Princesses is that there are tales to be told in other continents too.

I know Disney isn't the best at representing cultures accurately, but I enjoy watching a diverse range of movies and princesses. The European thing gets a bit repetitive after a while.

However I don't care whether the movie is specifically a Disney Princess one or not. Just as long as there is some diversity in general.

Now that I think about it again, Tygers_Eye does have a point. There should be more than one princess of each race. But like I said, the problem for me lies in the number of princesses. If Disney keeps making CGI princesses, they should split the lineup in two: one for the hand-drawn princesses and one for the CGI.

Disney is about telling good stories, not about being accurate about the race proportions in the world.

I would actually like to see more European princesses who are Italian, Irish, Danish (real Danish), Dutch, and Spanish. I would say Russian too but Anastasia will officially be Disney in a few months.
