I don't know. From my perspective, Merida is pretty beloved outside of here. In fact, one of the reasons it took me a long time to warm up to her was subconscious backlash from all the adoration she got.

Tiana seems to be hardly remembered at all. If she wasn't on the Official Disney Princess Merchandise Line, she'd fade into obscurity in no time at all.

I hardly ever see merchandise of her and I do it's usually tied in with the DP lineup where she is paired up with Jasmine as the token minority characters. Although in terms of merchandise, Mulan and Pocahontas probably take the cake because I barely see anything of them. On DP merchandise you can find Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snow White, Belle and Aurora (who is getting some more popularity due to the Maleficent movie and Sleeping Beauty coming out on the Diamond Edition Blu-Ray). Jasmine and Tiana are usually in the background in DP merchandise but you only find Mulan and Pocahontas IF there's a product with all the princesses on it.

People seem to only remember her as "the black princess". They seem to forget everything else about her character.

Merida and Anna aren't talked about outside of this site much either. Elsa and Rapunzel are wildly popular off this site, especially Elsa.

Um, as the person who runs Walt Disney Confessions, I get a lot of positive confessions about Tiana

I do not really know what most people think about Disney princesses but what I have seen from the internet is that at first when Brave came out here was a great deal of positivity towards Merida but now she is only mentioned when people talk of the flaws of the film. I have not seen any merchandise for her either(granted I live in Europe). Tiana is the other possible choice but she is loved some of in the interned communities like Tumblir and she is the black princess so she gets some attention from the mainstream.

Merida is not as popular due to her being the anti-princess in a culture of little girls who adore princessy ones like Rapunzel, Ariel and Cinderella. Anna, she gets almost no love from people thanks to everyone liking Elsa('s powers and song...) more.
