I think a lot of it depends on context. A lot of duties you think you might have really aren't that binding. The only ones I can think of that would really hold me down are my duties to my family, friends and children.

I would've probably gone with this yet I'd be second guessing myself quite a bit.

It's my life and I want to be happy with it. People who usually put their duty over their dreams become unhappy and develop signs of suicide.

Wait, what's this about suicide?
Parents and world leaders have to do this all the time and aren't unhappy or killing themselves.

I'd do the more selfish thing and choose to live happy.

@AudreyFreak Maybe I should have been clearer. What I meant about this is that it CAN lead to people committing suicide. With parents and world leaders, their duty is actually their dream. World leaders want to be great world leaders and parents want to have kids and put their kids first. That's part of their dream, so they're not sacrificing too much. But look at a case of someone like Rose from Titanic. Her life was being decided for her and it was her duty to marry a man she doesn't love, so that she and her mother would have money. But she was so unhappy that she actually did attempt suicide before Jack saved her. When someone is unhappy enough, they can often lead to acts of suicide. Not all the time but it's very possible.

I've met a lot of people in real life who deeply regretted their decisions based on their "dreams" (bad marriage, bad carrier choices), so I don't think it's always smart to choose based on your emotions. The world doesn't revolve around you, you know. (I also think it's a big sign of someone's selfishness but i rest my case)

Anyways I like duty. I like responsibility and maturity. I like that aspect of people and I approve of it in fictional characters. Life ain't easy and you don't always get what you want, so pucker up and deal with life instead of acting like a little kid.

I'm a feelings type of person but then again I'm still obedient and now know that you can't always do what you please.

I have chosen duty over dreams in real life. Just like my sister. Just like my mother. Just like my grandmother.

We are a family of women who choose to pay the bills and support relatives instead of chasing rainbows.
