I stand by that I believe Gothel loved Rapunzel, just the hair more. But she manipulated, lied to, isolated, and took advantage of Rapunzel. At least unlike the other villainess mothers she actually cared for Rapunzel.

Gother: I love you very much dear (talking to Rapunzel)
Rapunzel: I love you more (talking to Gothel)
Gothel: I love you most (talking to the hair)

^ Wow, very good point. She did lie, manipulated, isolated, and took complete advantage of Rapunzel. She robbed her of her childhood, and to be raised by her parent

Just because you tell someone you love them does not mean you do...How many men have lied to women and told them they love them just to get what they want? Mother Gothel lied and said the proper things to Rapunzel to get her to do what ever she wanted.....manipulation....There was a man in our school district who recently was caught for having sex with his 13 yr old students (I wonder how many he told he "loved" and cared for them) I don't believe she ever cared for Rapunzel as a person but for the everlasting youth she represented...

Saying I Love you is just words....actions speak louder then words and by Gothel's actions she never loved Rapunzel but used her

How many bad situations of being taken advantage of have you been in since you're very bitter about this subject(just kidding)? Anyway I find it hard to believe that she'd raise Rapunzel as her own child for 18 years and not care about her at all, no one is that heartless, if she didn't it would just be unrealistic.

I have not had any bad experiences I am just being realistic and not being naive...also I keep current with things and make sure I know what is going on around me...I realize you were just "kidding" but you can not blindly think that just because someone says I Love you that they mean it and I have heard too many horrible stories of Parents killing their own children or raping them (how can you do that if you truly love them?) That father raised and loved his daughter and then locked her up and raped her and had several children by her that he then raised "upstairs"....there are sick.manipulative people out there....

She did it all while making Rapunzel believe she just wanted what was best for her...

I think she did care for Rapunzel a little bit but she cared a lot more about Rapunzel's hair. She's definitely the worst one remaining in my opinion.

She might have cared a bit for Rapunzel but what she really cared about was her hair. She used Rapunzel and lied to her. She's pretty selfish IMO

Mother Gothel, in my opinion, NEVER loved Rapunzel. I'd elaborate further but since I wrote a long commentary in relation to the subject just about a day ago on Tumblr I'll just copy and paste my thoughts:

Mother Gothel continuously abused Rapunzel inflicting her with verbal pressure and planting immense insecurities in her head (due to systematically and methodically pointing out non-existent flaws related to Rapunzel’s personality or appearance, i.e “chubby”, “immature”, “clumsy”, etc) on a level so profound that Rapunzel was not physically but MENTALLY incapable of leaving her tower being deliberately misled and misguided by harmful and damaging information regarding the outside world and herself, coming to believe that in addition to people being inherently evil and cunning according to the only source information exposed to her - Gothel - SHE was also not worthy or skilled enough to face them and not be used and “eaten up alive” due to presumed incapability to handle herself - all of it essentially linking back to Gothel’s intention to exploit Rapunzel - and not even Rapunzel herself but her powers seeing as it was literally the only aspect Gothel truly cared about and invested in - for as long as possible, keeping Rapunzel sheltered and maintaining the illusion of happiness being limited to the walls of her tower/prison and drawing supplies that Gothel provided her with in order to keep busy and make sure she refrains from making attempts to break away from this excessively unhealthy environment. If there was any human/genuine feeling that Gothel ever developed for Rapunzel it had more to do with unreasonable obsession (not love let alone any kind of motherly affection) defined by her attachment to Rapunzel’s hair that possessed a quality of restoring her youth and prolonging her life, which, once again, was related to Gothel herself and her personal selfish goals rather than Rapunzel. Had there been a semblance of love Gothel would not have physically attacked Rapunzel (not to say physical assault is the extent of abuse that surpasses systematic mental torment given that both are admittely disturbing and thoroughly destructive in terms of affecting person’s psyche, just addressing another dimention of Rapunzel/Gothel relationship) putting chains on her at the first sign of rebellion and essential desire to live her life rather than being subjected to isolation and subsequently stabbing a man Rapunzel loved right in front of her. None of it can be classified by anything even remotely close to love.

I don't even need to explain.... it's just...... yeah.

At least she still gives Rapunzel birthday present and doesn't lie to her about her birthday. She doesn't hit her or make her a servant. Rapunzel does everyday chores like ordinary girl, not servant. But still she's the worse here compared to other mothers.
