This scene is least emotional than others, because, she knows that it was necessary to him to go to the war becuase the country ask him to do it. And also, at least, she found the solution.

I always feel bad for Ariel in this scene. She had a huge collection; there is no telling how long it took her to accumulate all of that stuff...however, it's not near as sad as someone dying, being separated from the one you love, or having something that belonged to your deceased Mother being ripped to shreads.

As I said before, I didn't think the word "sad" when I watched this scene. The emotion it gives you watching the leaves going from Pocahontas to John Smith is not a sad one. I used to take it as a "we'll see each other again, it's not a goodbye" (until the awful sequel that I won't count). It's more adventurous and intense than sad
