Natsu” is a Japanese name and the vocabulary word for “summer”.

His surname, Dragneel, is probably a combination between the word “dragon” and his father’s name, Igneel. 

I believe that Heartfilia is a name that Mashima came up with - a combination between the word “heart” and the Greek name Filia which means “friendship”.

(INTERESTING FACT: Hiro gave her this name when he was listening to the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”.)

Fullbuster is probably a combination between the word “full” and the English name Buster that derives from the word “bust”, from “burst”.

(INTERESTING FACT: Hiro Mashima has admitted that he forgot how he named Gray.)

Erza comes from Elsa/Elisabeth and means “God is my oath”.

Gajeel’s name is derived from the Japanese word かじる (Kajiru), which means “to bite”, “to gnaw”, or “to nibble”. The “Ka” sound is changed to “Ga” sound because “ガジガジ” (Gaji Gaji) sounds like a person eating in Japanese standard.

Wendy is a name of English origin, and its meaning is “friend”.

Marvell is a name that comes from Latin, and means “wonderful, extraordinary”.

(INTERESTING FACT: Wendy’s name started while she was set to be the Water Dragon Slayer

(yes, originally she wasn’t supposed to be a Sky Dragon Slayer)

, starting with the kanji for water “水”, to the Japanese word for Wednesday “水曜日”, to the rōmaji of Wednesday in English “ウェンズデイ”, to finally Wendy “ウェンディ.)

Juvia comes from the Spanish word "lluvia” and means “rain”.

I couldn’t find anything about her last name. 

Strauss as a boy’s name has the meaning “bouquet; ostrich; fight”.

Mirajane is a combination between the name Mira which means "wonderful; peace; prosperous" and Jane, a Hebrew name meaning "God is gracious". 

(INTERESTING FACT: Mira\'s name comes from parodying the username of Hiro Mashima’s friend from an online game.)

Elfman comes from a short form of a German personal name composed of the elements alf "ghost" and man "man".

Lisanna is a short form of Elizabeth and means “holy, sacred to God”.

The closest thing I could find to Laxus was the Latin name Lexus, which means “law”.

(INTERESTING FACT: Laxus’ name is based off the unit of luminous emittance, Lux.)

Jellal is boy’s name that has the meaning “greatness, superiority, renown”.

Alberona derives from the word “alberone" which means "big tree”.

(INTERESTING FACT: Cana’s name came from Arcana of the tarot cards.)

Levy is from Hebrew origin and means “joining”.

McGarden consists of “mc-”, a Gaelic ancestral name that means “son of”, and “garden”.
