Review: Game of Thrones Seasons 1 & 2 Steelbooks with Dolby Atmos
Prepare to be jealous. We’ve just received copies of the new Game of Thrones Steelbook Blu-Ray sets. Seasons One and Two to be exact. They’re sexy, beautiful and the sound is stunning. You can’t get your own until November 3rd but we’ve got some unboxing photos to share that will almost guarantee a pre-order from the true Game of Thrones fans out there.
These new collectors sets make Game of Thrones the first TV series ever to be released on Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos moving audio, the revolutionary new audio technology that places and moves sounds and music anywhere in the room, including overhead.
Here’s what they look like in the flesh:
The packaging is shiny and a pleasure to open. There’s a disposable case around the steel cases (yes, they’re actual metal!) that hold in the collectible magnet sigils you see here. Here’s what happens when you remove that:
The magnets are actually very well constructed and cling to the steel if you want to keep them with the sets. I’m putting mine on the fridge for all the world to see but you may want to keep your Game of Thrones collection in tact.
The discs themselves contain all of the same special features as all of the previous releases. There’s no new content on them but here’s what you DO get:
The Blu-ray features a newly remixed Dolby Atmos soundtrack, which places and moves sounds and music anywhere in the room, including overhead, creating a captivating experience that brings entertainment alive all around the audience. With the new Steelbook set, fans can hear Daenerys’s dragons swoop past them and feel the soaring score rise and fall around them. To experience DolbyAtmos at home, Dolby Atmos-enabled AV receivers and additional speakers are required; however, Dolby Atmos soundtracks are fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment and will automatically play in the best possible way.
This reviewer happens to have a Dolby 5.1 system in his man-cave (my wife won’t let me call it that, though) but we hear that Dolby Atmos can only be FULLY appreciated with several more speakers. If you’ve got that kind of set up, congrats! This set is definitely for you. I’ll keep these discs around until I’m able to upgrade my “not-man-cave”.
These discs are available on November 3rd, just in time for the holiday. Seasons 3, 4 and 5 are on their way too but we don’t have a date for those. Pre-order now so you’re set for gifts for that special Knight in your life. These may sell out in some places so don’t delay.
We hope to bring you reviews of additional seasons but in the meantime let’s all get pumped for the Season 6 premiere coming in 2016! Game of Thrones Season 5 will be available on DVD  in 2016 as well if you’re waiting on that.
I literally JUST finished paying off my Visa. Then I see this. I will justify spending the money for these boxed sets because 1) – They are awesome looking; 2) I want to experience for myself the Dolby Atmos sound and picture quality and 3) Because I want to add to my ever growing GoT collection of stuff.
