\' sixth season threw up more wild theories about the plot yet to come than ever before, and we can\'t get enough of them. Now we have to wait nearly a year before the next instalment, they\'re going to ramp up higher than The Mountain\'s hat peg.
As we look ahead to season 7 and beyond, we\'ve collected a handful of the most intriguing (or ridiculous) fan theories out there:
Earlier this season, fans theorised that Jaime Lannister will be forced to kill his sister/lover to stop her from unleashing a load of wildfire in King\'s Landing, much like he did with the Mad King before the show began.
As we now know, Cersei carried out her plan without being halted by anyone, but tore down the Great Sept of Baelor rather than the whole damned place. However, Jaime returned and looked on in horror at what she had done, at how it had led to the death of their last child Tommen and how it elevated her to the Iron Throne.
The West Wing: Who\'s had the best post-show career?
In both the show and the books, Cersei was told in flashback by a woman named Maggy the Frog (just go with it) that she would have three children, and that after seeing them crowned she would watch all of them die one after the other.
Now that we\'ve said goodbye to all three kids, the next bit of the prophecy states that Cersei will be strangled to death by someone known as "the Valonqar". In Valyrian, this translates as "little brother" or "younger sibling". While you (and she) might assume this was her hated younger brother, the dwarf Tyrion, it could actually mean Jaime, who was born just after his twin sister.
Maybe Jaime will finally see sense and realise he\'s meant to be with Brienne? Or are we shipping too hard?
And ask yourself: who else could kill Cersei and still have it be a really satisfying TV moment?
It\'s safe to assume that book fans\' hopes of Catelyn Stark being revived from the grave as the rampaging zombie Lady Stoneheart isn\'t going to happen in the TV show. Dragons, White Walkers, giants, time travel: fine. Undead Michelle Fairley? Don\'t be absurd.
During season 6, fans began pondering whether the character of Lady Stoneheart could be morphed into Sansa Stark instead, as she may go on a vengeance tour now that she\'s finally free and "safe" with Jon Snow and friends.
However, it makes far more sense for the Stoneheart persona to be passed onto her little sister Arya. She proved her assassin-like qualities in the finale, finally showing off her training from Jaqen and murdering Walder Frey.
While we can\'t see them turning Arya into a speechless zombie who kills everyone, we can at least imagine her adding several more people to her kill list and becoming a seriously dangerous assassin that people begin to follow.
We are now pretty damned certain that Jon Snow is Daenerys\'s nephew, although this
hasn\'t been 100% proven, despite the flashback scene at the Tower of Joy.
Assuming this is fact, then fans have reckoned that Jon\'s Targaryen blood has given him special powers that he doesn\'t even know he has (other than, you know, coming back to life and surviving epic battles despite crazy odds).
So maybe, like his aunt, he\'s immune to powerful heat and fire? Well, probably not. Other fans have also noted that not all Targaryens have this trait, as her brother Viserys would probably have shrugged off that molten gold thrown over his head.
But we could still see some unexpected traits from Jon yet. Our money\'s on dragon-riding.
One Redditor has put forward the claim that perhaps Arya\'s former teacher wasn\'t just following the Many Faced God. He actually is the big man himself.
Not only does Jaqen have the ability to change his face like his other Faceless Men pals, but he has proven to have extra powers, like taking away Arya\'s sight at will. Could there be more to him than he\'s let on? It would be odd if we just didn\'t see him ever again now that Arya has left him behind.
We\'ve seen this season how characters seem to have a path or a purpose (like Hodor holding the door). As The Three-Eyed Raven said, "the past is already written", so maybe Jaqen knows how important Arya is, and that\'s why he\'s taken such a keen interest in her life.
Maybe The Waif\'s whole existence was purely to help Arya get to the next stage of her quest? The Three-Eyed Raven made sure Bran and Hodor were where they needed to be at the right time, as he already knew it. Could Jaqen have similar plans for Arya?
This may sound silly at first (and it is), but hear us out. A Redditor came up with a theory that would be incredible if it turned out to be true.
Daenerys has sent Jorah on his own quest to find a cure for his fatal disease, greyscale. What mythological creature is known for its healing properties? The unicorn!
In the books, the Northern island of Skagos – ruled by House Stark – is thought to be the home of unicorns. Although it is also rumoured that the "Skagosi unicorn" is just a huge one-horned goat.
But let\'s say they\'re unicorns. Why not? We\'ve had giants and White Walkers. F**k it.
far away from Bear Island, where his family, the Mormonts are stationed. Sort of makes sense, right?
6. Gilly\'s son will take down the White Walkers
Well, sort of. Young Samwell could potentially end up being key to defeating the overall baddies of the series, according to a Reddit theory.
Gilly\'s son is most likely the very last true son of the evil Craster who wasn\'t turned over to the White Walkers. That makes him
the brother of various White Walkers, and knowing Craster\'s dirty history he probably shares bloodlines with gods know who.
The user suggests that big Sam\'s arrival at the Maesters\' Citadel will mean that he will discover a prophecy that could make little Sam a prophet for both humans and for the White Walkers, and could help bring peace to all.
Though, that would make a rather dull finale, wouldn\'t it? More likely that the White Walkers still want the child that was promised to them, and Sam\'s Valyrian steel sword may come in handy.
As we\'ve already said, we\'re 99% certain that Jon\'s real dad is actually the late Rhaegar Targaryen, although the show didn\'t actually make this clear in the finale.
One fan on Reddit has tried to deduce what Ned\'s dying sister Lyanna whispers after giving birth to Jon. Though quiet, "His name is" can be heard, but the rest of the sentence is inaudible (the gits). However, by reading her lips the user reckons she says a name that starts with a J and is three syllables long.
"I\'m not a great lip-reader, but I\'m fairly certain what she says is Jaehaerys," sparkledavisjr said. "The name is not included in the captions, probably on purpose."
What is the significance of Jaehaerys? Well, two previous Targaryen kings shared that name, and the first was known as one of the greatest ever kings, having expanded the Night\'s Watch, constructed the Kingsroad, restored peace between the Crown and the Faith and helped improve King\'s Landing.
However, at the time of Jon\'s birth all Targaryens were either being killed or in hiding, and so Lyanna and Rhaegar\'s son would be in danger, despite being the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. Thus, Lyanna made Ned promise to take him in as his own.
Though he clearly couldn\'t go back home saying that the baby\'s name was little Jaehaerys without the Lannisters or Baratheons piping up going "Erm, he\'s clearly a Targaryen then, kill the little shit". Instead, he named him Jon. Much easier.
8. The whole story is being written as we go along by a Maester in the library
In the season 6 finale, we noticed an object that looked very similar to something we see in the opening sequence as Sam first looked inside the library at the Citadel:
Known as an astrolabe, the device contains VERY similar winding metal bands like those we see during the intro, with the sun in the middle.
Also known as an armillary sphere, the model contains revolving bands to represent celestial bodies, and is used to track the movement of stars and planets and the changing of the seasons. The Maesters at the Citadel are known to determine when seasons officially end and begin, sending out white ravens to make the announcement known. So, this is probably what that globe is used for.
The blades on the device also shows the history of Westeros. A theory states how the astrolabe and the changing map at the beginning of each episode is actually the explanation of a long story, as told to us by a Maester – potentially Sam.
When Sam arrives at the Citadel, a Maester greets him wearing a pair of spectacles. When you look at the credits again, it seems that someone is viewing them through lenses.
Could the map be being observed and changed over time by a Maester? As we\'ve already mentioned, The Three-Eyed Raven told Bran that "the past is already written", implying that all the events we\'re seeing have already taken place and are just being retold.
Perhaps the final ever scene will be an old Sam looking up from his book? Plus, George RR Martin has compared himself to Sam. When asked what character he\'s most like in 2014, he said: "I would probably be Samwell Tarly. I love Sam, too. He\'s a great character."
