i dont have a german shepherd dog. ive got a shih-poo. a female named loosy. shes seven months and she hasnt had any hip problems yet! i really really like german shepherds though......my parents wouldnt let me get one...a shih-poo is half poodle and half shih tzu. shes small like a shih-tzu and has curly hair like poodles.

My Shepherd was 13 1/2 when her hips gave out and she couldn't walk. Ended up having to have her put to sleep. Couldn't see her hurting anymore. :(( AFter 2 years it still hurts. Was the hardest decision I ever had to mske.

ecpjll picked i dont have a german shepherd:
I love this breed, but could not handle thier short life-span. I could never say goodbye to my dog after 8-10 short years together. I've already had my lhasa apso for almost 11 years and her life span says 15 years...but I know 2 lhasa apsos who both lived well into their 20s (and wouldn't die but were humanely put-down because of their age and health problems). I need a dog I can enjoy for a long time. I've never lost anyone (to death) that was as close to me as my dog, she is my best friend in the world. And i fear the day i have to say goodbye to her. I don't think i'm strong enough to handle that. So my point was, as much as I love german shepherds, i'd never have 1 because they die too young.
