How is Mako Duyung a Spin Off Series to H20 just add water?

Okay so how is mako Duyung a spin off series to h20 just add water Iam very confused I get that it has to do with Duyung and takes place at mako island but mako Duyung does not even have the same characters. Can someone please help here.
