December/December - Chapter 8
9 February 2010
All the lights were finally off, the cameras turned down and the crewmembers were starting to part from each other, everyone going utama after a long hari of shooting. Hugh was usually useless after a hari like this, barely functioning and aching all over. Lately it had been even worse than ever. But tonight he felt peculiarly pumped.
He waved his goodbyes rushing out of the studios, hoping it hadn’t got too late in the meanwhile. What time was it? He grabbed his phone: 8.50. Not so late compared to other times, after all.
He hopped up the stairs of his trailer, reaching for his keys. Lights still off, he peeled his jaket off and started empting his pockets, looking for his cell phone. After a while, he stared down at his hand.
“Right…”
He had it clenched in there. Maybe he’d better turn on the lights and chill out. He dialled Lisa’s number. She had gotten utama so much earlier. What if she had fallen asleep atau thought he had forgotten about it?
One ring…
Two rings…
Three rings
“Come on, pick up…”
Four rings…
He was cut off. Possibly, if he took a quick pancuran, pancuran mandian and jumped on his bike in no lebih than 20 minit he could still make it; but then that would mean he would tunjuk up at her house without notice. He tossed his phone on the couch, kicked his shoes off and began to take his clothes off sejak twos: the hell with that. For once he could afford a carpe diem type of day.
Again, though…who the hell had berkata that?
He slid the pancuran, pancuran mandian door open and stepped in, putting his head down under the hot water jet. He leaned against the wall, supporting his weight on his arms, brainstorming for ideas. What could they do? Once it would have been so simple: they really didn’t need much to enjoy themselves in each other company, but he wasn’t sure it would be still the same. WordBox was nice. Old habits might work but…it wasn’t really an activity he felt thrilled about. What if she got bored and he ended up blowing up the only chance he had been able to provide himself in months to….well whatever might come out of this evening.
“Little piece of Nasihat to yourself: stop thinking so much. Just…act”
He rubbed both hands over his hair, endlessly picturing and ruling out possible scenarios. Then a rather appealing, although off-chance one occurred to him before he could help himself…and so he thought better to switch to cold water.
Lisa brought one arm up her chest, holding the hanger in front of her neckline. She looked herself up and down in the mirror, her lower lip tucked in her mouth.
“What do anda say?”
Shazam wiggled his muzzle from under the blanket, staring at her with lively, curious eyes. He tilted his head on one side.
“You’re right…too flashy” She tossed the burgundy dress on the bed, going back to sift through her wardrobe. She picked out a long dark-blue-green skirt this time.
“What about this one?” she berkata drawing it close against her hips “I could match it with my turquoise, lisle sweater….” Shazam crouched down on his legs. “Yeah, I think so too…too casual, even for a homey evening….”
She began to slide one hand over her clothes absentmindedly, trying to figure out what kind of evening she should expect to be ready for. Hugh had been so busy after they have finished shooting their bit that she hadn’t even had the time atau the chance to ask him anything. Well, he had talked about WordBox atau a movie…although this latter scenario wasn’t among her favourites. She shook her head, brushing off the feeling: the idea just made her feel unsettled.
She caught sight of Kaplow in the mirror. He was jumping on the bed, crouching seterusnya to Shazam.
“Hi there, anda …help me out here” she casted a playful, reproaching look at Shazam “Your friend isn’t being collaborative today” she said, pursing her lips in a pensive sulk. She got a pair of light blue jeans out.
“Jeans are casual enough, aren’t they? But if I match them with the right sweater…” she brought her index finger to her lips, tapping on them.
“Oh… what do think of this one?” she asked excited, singling out a white, off-the-shoulder cable-knit, long sweater “This is one of my favourites…”
She pulled her baju off, quickly sliding the sweater over her head “See? This is way better…”
She squeezed into the jeans and started checking herself out sideways, running her hands over her hips. This might work. It wasn’t too flashy, but neither excessively downy. She found a little smile dancing on her lips.
“Hugh used to Cinta my shoul…”
She froze, staring at her reflection. Then her eyes slipped on Kaplow and Shazam: somehow, their glances berkata it all.
“You’re right…this is stupid. It’s not a tarikh for God’s sake…”
She took off the sweater, throwing it over the kerusi, kerusi berlengan and rolled eyes at herself, sighing.
“What time is it, anyway?” she asked turning to her dogs.
Maybe she should call him….but what if he had forgotten? atau fallen asleep?
Her hati, tengah-tengah gave a little bump.
“Where’s my i-phone?! Have anda seen my phone guys?”
Hugh stepped out of the shower, drying his hair with a towel. He peered at his face in the mirror, rubbing his jaw. Was he supposed to shave? He dropped his shoulders down, exasperated at himself.
“This is NOT a date, anda didn’t ask her out…although this is the closest you’ve gotten to asking a girl out in your whole life…” he pointed out in one menelan staring at his reflection “But DON’T change topic here” he resumed, admonishing himself “this is an informal meeting…between two old friends…Nothing more. Think of this as…renewing old bounds” he ended resolutely.
He narrowed his eyes, shaking his head sympathetically at himself, with his bottom lip tucked into his mouth “And you’re talking to yourself in the mirror sejak the way…bad sign”.
He dropped his towel, putting his boxers on, grabbed a baju and went bare feet to the lounge room, reaching for his phone.
No calls yet.
He let himself drop on the couch, sinking down in it. Should he call her again? What if she had changed her mind?
He turned the TV on. News. He switched channel and kept zapping for a while. Then he stumbled over one of those overrated, crappy pseudoscientific programs. In this one, advocates of the upcoming apocalypse - foreseen for 2012 sejak the Mayan - were throwing hardly effective counter-arguments against the Griffith balai cerap, menara tinjau Director’s useless attempts to explain the scientific truth that had been distorted.
He arched his eyebrows, widening his eyes, pondering…
“Just gave it a try and stop being such a sissy”.
“Kap, Shazy…I am screwed, help me out here guys…where’s my…” she shut up, straining her ear.
“Wait…do anda hear that too?”
She started digging among the clothes that had piled up on her bed, looking for it.
Three rings…
How many dresses and pants had she ruled out already?
Four rings…
“Damn it!”
Five rings…
Finally. It was buried down in the first pair of pants she had tried on.
“Hey!” she answered out of breath, collapsing on the bed.
On the other side of the phone, Hugh sat up suddenly “Hey…Hi…I was about to hang up, thought anda might have fallen asleep or…” he swallowed hard, trying to slow down his mind “I don’t know…”
Lisa sat up crossing her legs “No, no…I was waiting for your call…I mean, I was expecting it”
“Good” Was she? atau was she just being polite? “You sure I am not…bothering anda atau something, right? We could…I mean, we can see each other another time, if anda are tired…” He clenched his teeth, and threw himself backwards on the couch, biting his fist. What was he doing exactly? He could as well have shot himself in the foot…
“No, I am not tired…I am great...” her face clouded a little. Maybe he had changed his mind “…but maybe you are tired, instead so…I don’t know…do you want to meet another time?”
Lisa held her breath working on gathering herself together. Now this was exactly why she had to get a grip on herself when it came to Hugh. She buried her face in her left hand: WHY couldn’t she be just as good at it today as she had been at it for so many months?
Hugh, in the meanwhile had sat up again on the edge of the sofa, kerusi panjang “No, of course not...”
“Ok, what have anda told yourself about your voice NOT coming out so panicked?” He needed to regain control. “Breathe. Be honest. Not too much would also be a good piece of Nasihat perhaps”
“No” he kept on “I want to see you. I mean, I was looking ke hadapan to it…honestly”
He rolled eyes at himself, clenching his left fist. Wasn’t this what would be label as “too much”?
Hugh’s sudden straightforwardness actually astounded Lisa, causing her to startle a little. Words almost choked in her mouth “Oh….ok, great. Me too”
A huge smile of relief burst on his face and this time he didn’t make anything to prevent it from reaching all the way up to his eyes “Great…so…”
“So….” she lay down on her bed, burrowing her head into the pillows, one arm outstretched towards Kaplow, petting him “What did anda have in mind? Is WordBox still on?”
He grinned, rubbing his nape “Actually, I have come up with something different…it’s gonna take a while but, if you’re not tired….”
Lisa frowned lightly, her eyes narrowing in suspicion “How…different?”
“I am sorry, you’ll have to rely on my judgment for this one” he berkata persevering gently, stifling a smile.
“Hugh…”
“Do anda trust me?” he prompted.
She found herself answering him without even thinking, making her wonder who this man was and if she had ever met him before. The gentle resolution behind that simple soalan was just irresistible.
“I do”
Hugh sprang up on his feet “Ok, I’ll pick anda up in 15 minit then”
Lisa moved her phone away from her ear, without a word. Hugh had already hung up. She felt flushed up and that was no good. She turned her head sideways looking at Kaplow, tickling behind his ears. Then she glanced a at her off-the-shoulders, cable-knit sweater, sighing.
“Maybe he should have asked me whether I trust myself, instead”
Hugh got off his bike, parking it right in front of the front yard. He pulled off his helmet, ruffling his hair, as he stared at Lisa’s house with the feeling it belonged to a far-away past that nevertheless he would never be able to wipe off for good. He took a deep breath, climbing up to the front door, his hati, tengah-tengah pounding harder and harder against his chest as he approached. He reached for the bell, ringing it.
Lisa checked herself out in the mirror one lebih time, making sure her sweater wasn’t sliding off her shoulders a little too much. She rubbed her lips together to spread the gloss, looking at her image, unsure whether she really knew what she was doing.
She breathed in deeply.
“You can do this. There’s nothing to be nervous about. Nothing’s changed”
She rushed to the door, pulling it open smiling.
“Hi” she sighed almost breathless.
Hugh sighed back a rather choked hi, as his jaw dropped a little and his eyes ran along her shoulders for a perpecahan, berpecah second. He hoped that hadn’t been conspicuous. Nice beginning: this was gonna be a long evening for him.
Lisa, on her behalf, pretended not to have noticed the way his eyes had caressed her, but at the same time wondered which sadist part of her had chosen to put on that sweater. atau masochist as well, because they way Hugh was staring at her right now, although his glance hadn’t lasted lebih than a bunch of seconds, wasn’t something she felt strong enough for, tonight.
She stuffed her hands in her pockets, pursing her lips in a tense smile. “You want to come in?”
“God, I’d like to…" he kept silent focusing on his breathing, mentally disposing of whatever set of inappropriate imej were overlapping inside his head “Mind over matter…”
“Actually, I was thinking we might go for a little ride, what do anda think?” he lifted up her anggur, claret helmet, the one he had bought her this past summer.
Slowly, a lebih natural and much lebih radiant smile started curling on Lisa’s lips. She looked at her topi keledar and reached to grab it.
“You still keep this?” she asked with a nostalgic, surprised look on her face, turning it over in her hands, as if she were looking for the some proof it was really hers.
He smiled, refraining from confessing that there was not a single thing about her he had had the courage atau the desire to get rid of. This definitely would have been labelled as a “too much” content.
He leaned sideways against the doorjamb, crossing his arms over his chest, as a little humorous smile started curling his lips up in delight. He found her utterly adorable when she had that expression on her face: she looked a child who had just discovered a little treasure.
“Of course not” he said. Lisa snapped her head up, confused. His smile broadened “I sold yours on e-bay months ago. You’ve no idea. People are willing to pay big, BIG money just to own something that might smell like your silky, ebony hair” he paused for a moment “You know…I had run out of money. Sorry” he concluded dismissively.
Slowly, Lisa’s face lit up in one of the most dazzling smiles he had ever seen on her and the rush of happiness that instantly flooded him was almost dizzying.
“I’ll need my leather jaket for this, then” she said, shaking her head still with a brilliant smile on. She turned, heading to her bedroom “This is what anda have in mind sejak the way? A ride?!” she asked knowingly, lifting her right shoulder up ever so slightly to cast him one last teasing, provocative glance over her shoulder.
As she disappeared behind the corner, he wondered whether she had any idea of the effect that could have on a man.
Lisa swung her wardrobe door open, getting down her jaket from its hanger. She glanced at herself in the inside mirror: her eyes were wide-open. Luminous. Glittering. She was slightly flushed, but she had never felt better. She sighed and rushed out of her room.
And as she got closer, watching Hugh on the threshold, she realized she had been waiting for tonight lebih than she was still willing to admit to herself and that, in spite of everything, she couldn’t help wanting him in her life.
“You ready?” Hugh asked pointing his piercing, blue eyes at her. They were of a lighter shade at the moment, although the warm light inside them was just as melting as usual.
Her eyes softened “I am”
Now, the only problem was she had to find a way to keep protecting herself from herself.
