Fans know the characters well...and fans ARE the ones who are going to be watching the movie :) but its also good to get new unknown actors for movies like this

I think that fans get too attached on the appearance of the actor rather than their level of acting. You can easily change a good actors appearance in a short space of time but you can't make good looking actors good at acting in a short time.
...though sometimes, the casting directors cast who the fans imagined and it works out.
