“Don’t worry. If anda take care of him as good as anda lead your soldiers, I’d say he’s in good hands.”
“I hope you’re right. We should head back to base and get some troops to help us alih her body.”
The sound of Hans and the young Skipper’s voice faded as they set back through the woods. Meanwhile, Skipper was processing everything he’d seen and heard, especially that last bit. The shock of everything he’d learned was too much for him. He turned and leaned against a tree. “Stop! Make it stop! I don’t want to see anymore! Take me back!” Skipper screamed through his tears. A moment later, the earth beneath him turned into snow, the leaves fell from the trees and disappeared into the sky, and the trees themselves faded into white. Skipper fell ke hadapan slightly when the pokok left his grasp. He squinted through his salty wet eyes at the place where his journey had started. He wiped away tears and turned to the owl. “How do anda know all of this? Why are anda telling me all of this?”
The owl looked at him with kind, sympathetic eyes. “I didn’t know any of this. And I wouldn’t have brought anda on this journey if the universe didn’t want me to.” He explained softly.
“Look, can anda please stop confusing me with your hippie-talk? I wanna know what’s going on here and why!” Skipper commanded wiping away lebih tears with the back of his flipper.
The owl smiled in understanding. “I am an image that your subconscious created for anda to get through your current situation. If you did not know any of this, how could I?”
Skipper turned and kicked some snow. “Oh, can’t anda just spit it out in English?!” He exclaimed.
The owl just smiled kindly. “I can understand why anda are upset. anda are overwhelmed with your newfound knowledge.”
Skipper turned back to the owl. “But why are you telling me all of this? Why couldn’t the ‘universe’ let Eve tell me when she was ready?”
“No one is capable of understanding the works of the universe.”
Skipper, now lebih annoyed and confused as ever, grunted in frustration and buried his face in the snow. The owl chuckled. Skipper’s muffled voice came through the snow. “Just leave me alone.”
“Suit yourself.” The owl berkata simply.
A silent moment went sejak before Skipper picked his face out of the snow and shook it off his head. He propped himself up sejak his elbows and said: “Really? You’ve been talking circles around me this whole time, and when I complain enough, anda just say ‘Suit yourself’? I didn’t think you’d give up that easily.”
“If anda do not want me to bother you, then I won’t.”
Skipper eyed him suspiciously. “Why do I get the feeling there’s a catch to this?”
“No catch.” Skipper gave him a ‘yeah right’ look and the owl continued. “But there is a consequence.”
Skipper shoved his face back into the snow and muttered: “That’s what I thought.” He picked his face back up and spit out some snow. “And this snow does not taste very good…” He berkata spitting some lebih out. The owl chuckled again. “So are anda gonna tell me what this ‘consequence’ is?”
The owl sighed. “Well, I’m afraid the only way you’re going to get back to reality is if the universe feels anda have reached higher understanding.”
Skipper looked at him for a moment. “You’re kidding, right?” The owl shook his head. “So you’re telling me, that if I don’t go on this hippie-quest then I’m never going to wake up?” The owl nodded. Skipper thought for a moment. “Wait a minute…I thought anda berkata that anything that I didn’t know, you didn’t know. How are anda telling me all of this?” The owl was about to answer him when Skipper interrupted him. “Wait, lemme guess,” He imitated the owls’ voice as best as he could. “‘No one is capable of understanding the wonders of the universe.’ Right?”
“Well, I was going to say ‘works of the universe’, but anda were close.” The owl explained with a laugh.
“Look, is this some kind of joke to you?” Skipper asked, annoyed with the owls’ amusement.
“Not at all.”
Skipper sighed. “Well, why won’t the ‘universe’ let me wake up until I’ve ‘reached a better understanding’? And please don’t say-”
“No one is capable of-”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it. I thought so.” Skipper berkata cutting him off. He thought for a moment, then sighed and said: “Fine. Let’s go.”
“If anda want to wait and pull yourself together, anda can.”
“No, I want to hurry up and gain my ‘understanding’ so I can get back to breaking out of prison.” Skipper insisted. The owl nodded in understanding and the snow ran through its cycle.
Skipper was surprised to once again see himself. It was about a week after he’d found Private. He was in his quarters holding him, bouncing him up and down, trying to get him to sleep. He’d recently discovered that Private was about a tahun old, and could say few words. He’d always had trouble getting him to go to sleep the first few months he’d had him, but there was something about him that Skipper couldn’t quite place his flipper on. There was something about him that made Skipper feel as if it was his destiny to protect him. Skipper approached the younger him and felt his hati, tengah-tengah melt all over again as he watched his young Private smile at him and squirm in delight.
“Go to sleep…go to sleep. Go to sleep, anda little rascal!” The young Skipper urged with a laugh. He sighed as Hans came into his quarters.
“Captain, General Cordell has called a meeting. All commanders are to lapor to HQ stat.” He explained.
“But I can’t seem to get Private to sleep.”
“Just put him in his little crib. He’ll eventually get bored and fall asleep. He’ll be fine.”
“But what if he starts crying?”
Hans chuckled. “Captain, you’ve only had him for a few days and you’re already Berlakon like his own father! Listen, my wife does this all the time for my daughter. It works every time. Trust me.”
The young Skipper sighed. “Alright. I suppose anda have lebih experience in being a father than I do.” He looked down at that happy hatchling and smiled back. He turned around and placed him in his little basket and whispered: “Good night, young Private.” and followed Hans out of the tent, blowing out the candlelight as he left.
Skipper thought for a moment. He’d forgotten about Hans being married when they were in the army. He approached the baby Private, who was curiously looking around. He was about to soalan why he was here when he saw two figures in the opening to the tent. They crept and stealthily slipped in. It was Eve and Heather.
Skipper looked from Private, then back to the girls. Eve approached Private and picked him up out of his makeshift crib. She cradled him and he giggled. “Ssshhh…” She berkata quietly. Heather tapped her shoulder and Eve watched her sign. Eve nodded. They started to walk toward the back of the tent when a voice was heard outside.
“Captain, please. He’ll be fine!” It was Hans’s voice. Skipper’s voice followed.
“I just have this feeling!”
Skipper saw his and Hans’s figures standing at the entrance to his quarters. Eve put Private back in his tempat tidur bayi, katil bayi and she and Heather hid behind the bed, and just in time. Skipper walked in at that moment with Hans following. Skipper looked in the basket Private was in. Private had bunched up the covers and was gradually starting to fall asleep. “See, look! He’s almost asleep. Now let’s go before the General gets impatient!” Hans whispered.
“I still don’t feel comfortable leaving him here all sejak himself. If anything happened to him, I don’t know what I’d do.” Skipper whispered back.
“He’ll be fine!” Hans sighed. “Would anda like me to get someone to stay with him?”
“Who would want to use their time up watching after a hatchling?”
“You are captain of this army. All the soldiers look up to you. Any of them would be happy to do anda a favor. Now go.”
Skipper sighed. “Fine. Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it. Come on.” The two of them left and Eve and Heather emerged from behind the bed.
Heather went straight to Private, but Eve moved a little slower. Heather urged her to hurry up, but Eve just shook her head. “Heather, I think we’re making a mistake.” She whispered. Heather looked at her curiously. “Heather, anda and I both heard what that ‘Captain’ said. If anything happened to him, he wouldn’t know what to do. What if…what if he’s better off with him?” Heather shook her head and held Private closer. “Heather, think about it. Do anda really think he’d be better off living with Alastair? Please, Heather. I don’t want anyone else to go through what we have to go through. Put him back and let’s go before those soldiers get here.” Heather looked down at Private, then nodded, knowing that it was best for him. She then put the now sleeping Private in his basket, covered him with the blankets, and she and Eve turned and they crept out of the tent.
The snow picked up and repeated its pattern and Skipper and the owl were in Alastair’s quarters just as a guard burst through the door holding Eve and Heather sejak the flipper. “Let me go! Let me go!” Eve was saying, or, screaming, as it were.
“Shut up, you!” The guard commanded. He turned to Alastair. “Sir, your daughters were caught outside in the woods, heading away from the army base.”
“Army? Evelyn! Surely anda didn’t go crying to the cavalry?” Alastair asked.
“No. And it’s none of your business what we were doing there.” Eve shot back.
“Oh isn’t it now? Might I ask how anda snuck on and off base without being seen?” Alastair asked suspiciously.
“I’m sneakier than I look.” Eve berkata simply.
“Well, anda must be. anda also snuck past my guards. I’m very impressed.”
“And I should care, why?” Eve berkata with another tug, trying to break free from the guards’ grasp.
“I’m very disappointed that anda snuck out again. Luckily my guards are just too quick for you. However, this is the last straw.”
“What exactly are anda getting at?” Eve asked taking a step back.
“I’m going to ensure that anda never sneak out again.” Alastair picked his talkie up off of his meja and spoke into it. “Clark, come in here a minute.” Amidst the wait for ‘Clark’, Alastair ordered the guard to take Heather up to her room.
“What are anda doing, Alastair?” Eve asked, wishing she could take the opportunity she was in there alone with him to strangle him.
“You’ll see, darling.” A moment later a guard came into his quarters. “Take Evelyn to the 7th floor.” He commanded.
“But sir, that’s where we-”
“I know what we do up there, Clark. Just do it.” Clark looked at Eve, who grimaced at him. Clark made a grab for her flipper, but Eve jumped back.
“No, I’m not going with him!” She cried.
“Now, Eve, just go nicely.” Alastair commanded softly.
“What do they do on the 7th floor, Alastair?!” Eve asked, giving him a hard glare that demanded an answer.
“You’ll find out.” Alastair answered.
Clark stepped ke hadapan and grabbed her flipper and Eve struggled to break free, but Clark was too strong for her. He pulled her out of the room and Skipper followed. “Let go of me! Didn’t your mother ever teach anda that it’s rude to handle a lady this way?!” Eve shouted at the guard as they met the elevator. Clark pulled her in and the doors shut behind them. Skipper managed to slip in before the doors closed.
“Look, lady, I don’t like this as much as anda do. Now just calm down and cooperate and you’ll get through this.” Clark berkata as the elevator started ascending to the 7th floor.
“Get through what?! Where are we going? What happens on the 7th floor?!” Eve asked again, staring hard into his eyes.
Clark looked deep into Eve’s eyes for a moment, then berkata slowly: “Whenever your father-”
“Alastair.” Eve interrupted, refusing to acknowledge Alastair as being her father.
Clark sighed and continued. “Whenever Alastair recruits another one of his spies…he…calls me to train them.”
Eve’s face fell in shock. “Alastair…wants me to work for him?” She asked slowly.
“Most likely, yes.” Clark answered. The elevator doors opened into the 7th floor. Eve, Clark, and Skipper looked down the long hallway with the sounds of fighting cutting through the walls. Eve and Clark stood where they were for a moment, then Clark pulled Eve out of the elevator. “Come on, let’s get started.” Eve followed without struggling, knowing it would be all but pointless to fight it.
The snow then took them to the room Eve was being trained in. Eve and Clark were in combat and Clark knocked Eve off of her feet. She fell to the floor with a frustrated grunt. She jumped to her feet in a combative way, turned on her heel and kicked. Clark blocked her and swung his fist to her face, which Eve dodged and she punched him in the stomach. Clark grabbed her flipper and spun her around, pushing her forward. Eve grunted in frustration and hit the punching bag that was to her left with all of her strength, causing it to hayun, swing a few times.
“Good, now if anda could get that kind of punch in in battle-”
“You don’t get it! I’m never going to get this right!” Eve insisted.
Clark crossed his flippers. “Not with that attitude. Let’s go again.”
Eve turned on him. “We’ve been at this for four months now and I’m still in square one!”
“At square one.” Clark corrected.
“Whatever! I’m never going to be able to take these skills into battle! I’ll die!”
“You’re right. anda will.”
“Well, thanks for the encouragement.”
“You’re going to die in battle because anda refuse to try to get better. Let’s go again.” Clark berkata getting in combat position. Eve rolled her eyes and got ready. “No, no, no. You’re doing it wrong.”
“Doing what wrong?! We haven’t even started yet!”
Clark stood upright and walked around to her side. “Raise your elbows,-” He pushed her elbows higher. “chin down, and eyes straight ahead,-” He pushed her chin down. “and keep your center of gravity low.” He wrapped his flippers around her waist and gently pushed down. He waited there a moment, a firm grip around Eve’s waist, then he deeply inhaled to pull himself together and started back for where he was, but Eve caught him sejak surprise. She jabbed his side and turned on her heel and kicked him in the face.
He stumbled backwards and steadied himself, then looked up at Eve, who had returned into combat position and was smiling deviously. “How’s that for better?” She asked.
Clark smiled and wiped blood from his beak. “Nicely done.” He took a step ke hadapan as he said: “But I think anda could’ve done lebih with it.” Eve took the opportunity to try to catch him sejak surprise again, making a jab for his jaw, but Clark grabbed her flipper and pulled her close. “Fool me once.” He berkata simply. For a moment they stared deep into each other’s eyes, then Clark leaned ke hadapan and kissed her.
“I hope you’re right. We should head back to base and get some troops to help us alih her body.”
