Of course it never changes, every element has a different amount of protons in its nucleus, it's what identifies it, the amount of neutrons and electrons can change, which leads to isotopes (different neutrons) and ions (different electrons)

Ions, that's what they're called. Couldn't remember, we went over this a while ago...
