soalan for any Americans/people who understand the American education system...

Is there something before Kindergarten? Because I was comparing the British and American school system and we have a tahun before what Americans call Kindergarten called Reception. Do Americans have something similar?

Before Kindergarten is preschool. kids can start preschool at 3 years old. Usually they're in kindergarten at 5 years old.

before kindergarten is pre school. It can be either be like an actual school, atau in my case hari care. The daycare I went to had a pre school set up to it once anda were out of the baby and toddler rooms. If anda go to pre school that's generally one tahun then anda graduate up to kindergarten and actually start elementary school.

I think it's a mix of getting little kids used to socializing, give them a bit of a head start and, yes, as a form of babysitting while their parents are at work atau school atau something.
