Reign Season 3 Trailer Makes Chilling Prediction: 'Scotland's Queen Will Fall' 

The CW on Friday released the first trailer for the upcoming third season of

(Oct. 9, 8/7c) and things are looking bleaker than ever for our girl Mary.

For starters, Queen Elizabeth remains determined to de-throne her (“My sweet cousin Mary will suffer my wrath”), and with that no-good Catherine by her side, Elizabeth already has the upper hand before the battle even begins.

Despite ailing Francis’ presumably genuine offer to help “as long as [he] can,” Mary knows full well she “can’t take on two queens” and live to tell the tale. So the question is: Who 

 can she turn to for help? (Somebody resurrect Clarissa, ASAP!)

Time to move the action back to Scotland and out of French court.. Frances is already overdue for his historical death… and the stuff that happened with Mary back in Scotland is much more interesting.

They can do whatever they want… as long as we don’t get any more Mary-centric love triangles.

You know *nothing* about Mary, Queen of Scots, do you? The four or so years leading up to her abdication are so soapy nobody would believe ’em if they had been fiction. To start off with, her beloved male secretary (who probably wasn’t her lover, but framed to make it look that way) was murdered by her second husband, who was her first cousin.

people the cw is not the history channel or a narrated history book their their to entertain if i wanted a lesson i can go the history channel or open a book the show is about drama i say take take dramatic writing licens and shock every one by saving or even have a frary baby and everything i just said could save reign their downhill death slo of of a fall

Yea its a tv show.. but i’d like them to at least loosely follow the historical record. The actual story has a lot of drama already.

Anyone else a little put off that they seem to be going for a straight up villain with Elizabeth’s character? Elizabeth was a great queen and I hate them portraying her as a catty mean girl

This is another instance in which my historical ignorance serves me well.

I don’t see her as a villain, more as a Queen struggling to rule a country just like Mary is. Yes she is antagonistic towards Mary but only cause she struggles in her country.

This is only one tiny bit we’ve seen of Elizabeth,they could very well make her layered as the season progresses.Elizabeth was a great queen but she saw Mary as threat to her crown seeing as Mary could’ve claimed it Plus Mary plotted to kill her in later years so it’s not surprising Elizabeth isn’t warm & fuzzy towards her.

She might of been a great Queen but she still signed the order to chop Mary’s head off and kept her prisoner for almost twerny years. Still Mary lived on in the end, her son became King of England.

Okay but Mary was executed because she was involved in a plot to assassinate the actual Queen Elizabeth first so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A great Queen??? She lied, betrayed, and killed her way to a throne that rightfully belonged to Mary!!

I know, what we could expect for the daughter of Henry VIII who like to chop the heads of his queens, and her mother an adulter and traitor

She kinda *was* a catty mean girl at this early point in her life. She hadn’t expected to ascend to the throne of England but was the only Protestant left in the Tudor line after the deaths of Bloody Mary and Queen Anne and the assassination-by-execution of Lady Jane Grey. It’d be like if one of Sarah Ferguson’s daughters was the last royal standing.

Elizabeth’s treatment of Mary Stuart was *horrible,* but understandable considering that 1) they were the reigning symbols of Protestantism and Catholicism in the British Isles during *the* era of religious civil wars, 2) they were women and therefore, their power as queens was highly coveted by the men surrounding them, and 3) Mary, despite her efforts to try to reconcile the Protestants and Catholics in Scotland, was sold out by the Protestants, including members of the double-dealing Fraser clan (whose descendants are fictionalized in Outlander), and even close family. Her elder half-brother, James, straight-up betrayed her in the latter years of her troubled reign. Mary’s eventual, bloody beheading on a trumped up assassination charge is widely considered to be one of the earliest blatant examples of plausible deniability, in which her execution was enacted by an ambitious officer in Elizabeth’s court who despised Mary personally. Because Elizabeth’s very legitimacy was in constant question — Henry VIII’s tendency to kill and/or divorce his wives (sometimes to kill *and* divorce them) delegitimized Elizabeth and some crazy legalistic gymnastics were done to (not really convincingly) relegitimize her so that she could ascend to the English throne despite Mary, being the legitimate granddaughter of Henry VIII’s father through Henry’s sister, had greater (and, importantly, unquestioned) legitimacy. Elizabeth I is IMO quite overrated as a ruler — IMO, any ruler who had occupied the throne for fifty-sixty years is going to lord over her land in an era that’s stable simply because it has continuity of leadership. Scotland, by contrast, had been politically unstable for many generations because it was under constant attack by the English and went through several periods of several kings in a row reigning a decade or less each. Scotland only survived as a separate country for so long due to the “special relationship” between Scotland and France that came about in a treaty signed a couple of hundred years previously that France really never honored until Francis’s father Henry decided to use Mary as a pawn to try to conquer England with. Henry’s failure to do so — compounded by Francis’s untimely early death — was essentially the end of the Scottish-French Alliance. Francis’s death really *was* the end of an era for Scotland.

Elizabeth’s ability to keep herself on the throne for so long wasn’t really due to any real ability as a ruler (in the sense of how she ruled her subjects), it was her ability to stay unmarried (“the Virgin Queen”) and use the threat of Mary ascending to the throne for so long — Mary was imprisoned by Elizabeth for twenty years and she always maintained that her abdication from the Scottish throne was made under duress, a situation which made even the Protestants consider Elizabeth’s claim to the English throne to be even hinkier than it already was — to keep her enemies within her own Protestant ranks in line. In that context, the show portraying Elizabeth as a catty Mean Girl isn’t exactly out of line because it establishes Elizabeth’s talent for manipulativeness.

That was a really well-summarized historical account. I’m extremely familiar with the story and I see nothing wrong with it. The more you delve into the history of the time the more you wonder if Mary was just a victim of everything. I really enjoy Reign and I have no problem with the writers not following everything to the letter so long as major events aren’t changed much. And history really is open to much interpretation and guesswork.

It could also be argued that Elizabeth’s longevity on the throne was as a result of the machinations of Sir Francis Walsingham, her spymaster and most loyal confidante who, it’s said, had agents in every royal court in Europe. He was cunning and ruthless and did the things Elizabeth couldn’t be seen to do. In fact, Walsingham is credited with being the founder of England’s secret service.

The promo looks good. It seems much more character centric and it will pay the way for Mary to become the Queen she was eventually.
