Grizzer

Grizzer, a Great Plains subspecies of the gray wolf, was born on May 5, 2004. He is a littermate to Maya and has matured into a strong and big (120+ lb)... adult male. He was removed from the Exhibit Pack in March 2011 after the tragic loss of his littermate, Maya. It was determined that Grizzer had been losing confidence in his status and without the dominance of his littermate, he couldn't compete with the younger packmates. Grizzer is retired, but not currently living with the other retired wolves, Shadow and Malik. During the summer of 2011, an alternate enclosure is being planned...

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The National Zoo is welcoming the birth of four maned serigala, wolf pups at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Va.

National Zoo officials say the pups were born to 8-year-old Salina and 4-year-old Nopal. Keepers are monitoring the pups closely because maned serigala, wolf pups have a 50 percent mortality rate in the first month, according to zoo officials.
