Annabeth
When she opened her eyes everything around her was dark. Pitch black, she couldn’t even see her hand in front of her face. Her whole body ached and screamed with pain as if she’d fallen hard on the firm, smooth surface beneath her. It was definitely made of a powerful stone. If she had to guess…
Then she recalled what had happened. Arachne, the strand of her web, and her and Percy falling, falling, then black. At the realization Annabeth’s hati, tengah-tengah beat quickened, pounding hard in her chest. Oh gods… she was really here.
Her brain was suddenly able to seize Rawak details, she hadn’t noticed before, but loss of vision and apparently panic could help anda notice a lot lebih than meets the eye.
The room was cold, the floor chilling to the bone. All around her Annabeth could her whispers, quiet as wisps in the wind, but as fierce as a hiss. The sound made her hati, tengah-tengah race even more, because of what she heard.
Wisdom’s daughter walks alone; falling from the ice son of Neptune shall drown; betrayed sejak one who calls anda friend; one shall perish sejak a parent’s hand; seven half-bloods shall answer the call; preserve atau raze; who holds the key to endless death…death…
The voices changed into the raspy voice of Gaea herself. Death, yes that’s what is in store for anda daughter of Athena. anda and the son of Poseidon shouldn’t have come…
Percy! With a start Annabeth realized she wasn’t alone down here with nothing but monsters and freaky hissy voices that knew just about every prophesy she’d ever heard.
The two of anda will be slain here in this pit of death, and your blood will awaken me from my slumber. anda were right to think you’d never again see the light of day. Now anda will know how my servants feel, anxious waiting to be free of the Tartarus. But unlike them, Annabeth Chase, anda cannot return to the mortal world, anda only have one life…
Now Annabeth’s hati, tengah-tengah was like a snare drum in her chest pounding hard. Somehow she could feel the spirits down here trying to reach her, obeying to Gaea’s bidding. Mother Earth began to laugh, the sound echoing throughout the chamber and with a start Annabeth realized how big the angkasa was even though she couldn’t see a thing. Something in her was anxious to run, and run she did.
But as she took her first steps, tearing blindly through the darkness, her forgotten broken ankle exploded in pain sending her crashing into something sticky thin and firm. The terror in her chest expanded until it exploded when she realized that she’d just run straight into Arachne in her woven trap of labah-labah silk.
Annabeth’s skin prickled with the sensation of tiny creatures crawling up her arms and legs and she let loose a cry, jumping away from the giant webbed version of Chinese handcuffs. The spiders made their way up her skin biting it as they went. For a couple saat she thought she could hear the Mother of Spiders laughing and finally understood how someone could faint from fear. Her head already felt woozy, and her vision was probably swimming even though she couldn’t see a thing.
Still Annabeth crashed to the ground blindly backing up as far away from the Weaver as she could. The spiders were beginning to greatly overwhelm her, she could feel them crawling up her neck now. Tears stung her eyes, from both the pain of her ankle and her fear. Nothing came to her mind of how to get out of this situation.
Suddenly her vision was blinded sejak a burst of light at her shoulder. It was only a faint glow, but in after being in the pitch blackness for so long it seemed blazing to Annabeth. For some reason the spiders retreated at the light scurrying back out of the bulatan of the faint bulatan the bronze weapon gave off.
And then they were gone.
Annabeth stared at Percy both of them breathing heavily. Except for a small bulatan of faint light that riptide gave off it was completely dark. Annabeth could barely make out Percy’s face; though his sea green eyes seemed to glow like a cat’s in the darkness. The silence was eerie; it made Annabeth feel like they were the only people in the world, dead atau alive. It scared her, but at the same time she didn’t care. If all she cared about was that she was with Percy.
All at once he threw his arms around her and she buried her face in his chest. There was something about the comfortable feeling of being close to him that made her feel safer. She wanted to cry, but she hated that feeling of being weak, and she was drained enough as it was.
“You okay?” Percy murmured, his voice concerned.
She nodded weakly, still clinging to him, like the lifeline that he was.
“Are anda sure--?” he asked, but was cut off sejak Annabeth.
“Percy, I’m fine,” she insisted. But they both knew she was lying. They’d just fallen into the Tartarus, she’d been attacked sejak spiders, and it seemed like they were, without a doubt, far away from anyone else’s help, and at the mercy of the giants, monsters, titans, etcetera of the Tartarus. Annabeth could feel herself shaking in Percy’s arms.
How would they make it out alive? There were so many villains, monsters, things that barely anyone had ever been able to kill, considered impossible, ancient down here. They were left alone, beyond the help of the gods, to fight through this pit of death.
Annabeth considered all of the possibilities. No doubt that there were many monsters down here that were particularly angry at her and Percy. They’d do anything to kill the two of them. Especially Kronus…oh gods Kronus.
Percy must have seen the look on her face in the dim light. “What?” his eyebrows were furrowed like when he was worried. You’re cute when you’re worried. Your eyebrows get all scrunched up. Annabeth suppressed a smile at the memory.
But then fear clouded over her again and she took a shaky breath, still leaning heavily against her boyfriend. “Kronus, all the titans we killed Percy, they’re down here, and they’ll be hunting for us.”
His eyes widened. “But--but I thought that Kronus wouldn’t ever be able to gain conscious again…” He trailed off staring at Annabeth pleadingly.
Annabeth shrugged helplessly. “I don’t know. Let’s just…”
She stopped. What would they do now? She’d never read anything about the Tartarus, except on the whole “monsters coming back to life concept”. That wouldn’t really help them would it? She felt so tired and drained but the vast empty room made her feel exposed and unsafe. “Things” were lurking in the unending darkness that surrounded her and Percy, she knew it. What if they fell asleep? Their throats would be slit in a matter of seconds.
That cold feeling was hovering above them right now, Annabeth could feel it. She gulped and tried to push down the thoughts that were creeping through her mind, slowly, but surely. Angrily she blocked them all. As a daughter of Athena she hated feeling weak it drove her crazy. Maybe that was her fatal flaw, hubris, talking. She couldn’t stand not being the one under control. Yeah, she’d had to fight that after meeting Percy, the camp’s natural born leader.
He was studying her face trying to pick out her emotions on the situations. Finally he spoke, “You should get some sleep.”
“No.”
“No?” Percy asked as if he couldn’t register her meaning of that word. “Why not? Your ankle is broken, we fell from the mortal world into the Tartarus, and you’re scared-“ he sighed. “Don’t deny it Annabeth.” She could feel her scowl, but Percy continued as if he hadn’t heard a thing. “Why shouldn’t anda get some rest?”
“I need to make sure of something first.”
She lifted herself up, grabbing Riptide for protection and light, ignoring Percy’s protests. The blade gave off a ghostly glow highlighting the darkness. The shinning blade was reflected in the smooth glassy surface of the chamber’s floor. It showed Annabeth’s pale face as well. Squinting she scanned the illuminated bulatan of the room and spotted what she was looking for. Hobbling, she made her way over, hati, tengah-tengah pounding in her chest, and ankle crying out in pain. She ignored it.
Arachne’s jail was still there, like a shimmering white tomb in the middle of a dark graveyard. There was no sign of the spiders that had attacked Annabeth earlier. The woven trap was still bulged as if Arachne was still there waiting for Annabeth to approach. And approach she did. Percy followed her from behind unease etched in his face.
When Annabeth reached the webbing Arachne spoke, her voice like three snakes talking at once. “Foolish daughter of Athena. anda once thought anda could outwit me hmm? anda thought anda could escape Gaea as well, my mistress. The son of the gorgon failed yes, but anda are no lebih selamat, peti deposit keselamatan here than in the mortal world. She has plans for anda and the son of a sea spawn. The gorgon’s son was his half-brother I believe.”
Percy made a gagging sound behind Annabeth. “Really?” he wined.
Arachne continued. “Unfortunately I was not chosen to be the one to bring anda to my mistress’s sacred grounds-“
“I wonder why?” Percy muttered under his breath.
“-But he is coming for anda Perseus Jackson and Annabeth Chase. I may not be the one to dispose of anda as I would have wished, but I have brought anda to the place of your deaths. Mark my words anda spawns of wisdom and sea, anda will not leave the Tartarus.”
The Weaver let out a cruel laugh. “Farewell tribute of Athena,” she berkata mockingly. “You will sertai your dead Friends sooner than anda think. The true and rightful Queen of the Earth will rise and all anda have ever known will be destroyed.”
With that the silken trap melted into a silvery mist, carrying Arachne with it. Annabeth fell to her knees her energy completely drained; Riptide fell to the floor with a clutter. Percy rushed ke hadapan holding her in his arms. Her heartbeat was going a million miles an hour, pounding hard in her chest making her feel sick.
“She was bluffing Annabeth,” Percy tried to assure her, but his voice was uncertain. He was scared too, Annabeth could tell sejak the way he sounded. “Just-just try to get some sleep, okay?”
Annabeth nodded, but her thoughts were going sejak faster than a freight train on rails; she’d never calm down enough for sleep.
“I’ll take first watch. `Kay?”
“`Kay.”
Percy kissed her lightly on the lips. “We can do this,” he promised.
“How can anda be so sure?”
Annabeth’s boyfriend looked past her into the darkness. “Maybe I’m not. Maybe I’m just saying what we need to believe.”
With that Annabeth lay her head on his shoulder, and closed her eyes. Far off to their right there was a creak, a whir. To their left something whisked through the blackness. The whispers were non-stop now that she and Percy weren’t talking. Annabeth wondered if he heard them too, atau if she was going crazy.
That night she dreamed of an endless cavern dropping into nothingness, and a vast labyrinth, comparing the similarities of the two.
