I steel myself as the person on the stage reaches for a name. It can't be me, can it? I think.
I wait in anticipation; who's name will she call?
"Katherine fosters" the lady calls out.
"No!" I cry, unable to control myself. Not her; anyone but Kate. My best and only friend.
The lady looks down at me in surprise.
"I volunteer!" I yell, almost sobbing.
Kate looks at me sadly.
She knows she can't do anything to stop me; I don't want to be stopped. Not if it means her death.
I walk up to the stage, waiting as the lady reaches in for the name of a boy.... -Tori

I just stood there unable to move until someone pushed me forward and I fell to the ground. Everybody laughed but I ignored it and made my way up the stage looking like a disaster with my warn clothes and greasy hair and looking like I hadn't had a shower for like a week well that was kinda true you see I've lived on the streets since I was ten. I wait as the boy calls out the next name.

A warm breeze full of the scent of the sea wafted past my nose. I smiled a little, but then turned to look at the stage where the announcer was pulling out the female tribute's name.
"Arriety Lyson!" she called out.
No, not Arriety. Arriety is a young 12 year old girl that has lived right down the street from me since she was born. In fact, my mother helped deliver her. I pushed my way to the center aisle.
"I volunteer as tribute in place of Arriety Lyson!" I yelled, waving my hand in the air.
Two peacekeepers came and escorted me to the stage, where I stood in my best green dress, waiting to be pushed into the Justice Building, where I would wait until the train was ready to take me to the Capitol.

I stood there whaiting for the names to be called the warm summer breeze hit my face gently I could smell the fresh pine needles on the tall trees, 'this would of been a good day to go hunting' I thought staring out into the trees it made me angry that we couldn't do anything about these games that we had to stand here like toys whaiting for one of us to be picked and to be played with like if weren't people at all.
But my thoughts were interrupted as fear curled up my spine when I heard the name I was dreading to hear Jesse Paige it was my name I stood there for a seconed but made my way up the steel cold steps as tears started to fall down my face everyone staring at me fealing pitty and now sudently this warm summer day had turned to my worst nightmare as I awaited for my fellow tribute.

Backstory: Chandler has lived a hard life. His father died when he was 8, making him the sole provider for his family, as his mother was and is chronically ill. He learned how to get food from the ocean, and he then in turn, learned many useful skills. His family has 9 people in it. His mom, 3 sisters, Kaylee(12), Merry(10), Lacey(6), and 5 brothers, Matthew(12), Caden and Cole(9), Nelson(7), and Brent(6).
District 4

Blue Stardon.
15 years old.
Good with rifles, swords, and spears.
Skills include running and sword combat.
District 2.
Blue has trained for this his whole life. Last year he was not able to compete because his brother volunteered and it "got complicated". Blue's brother did not come home last year. Their father threatened to disinherit Blue if he did not try and volunteer this year. As far as lives go Blue has had quite the easy one, with a future in the Peacekeepers and meat on the table every week. The female tribute is a girl that Blue has never met before, and does not look like much. Her name is Forest Greenwich.

Forest (AKA Green) actually does looks like much. Tall and not exactly skinny, yet considerably lithe, Forest has also been training for this for quite a while. Although it is more like planning. Last year her little brother found a sort of force field in the arena and almost escaped. Before he found free land, however, the Gamemakers had him shot down and killed. Green promised to seek revenge for her brother's death this year in the arena by killing the Gamemaker, possibly at her own expense. She does not think Blue looks like much, and cannot trust him. She does not care about winning.

In exchange for shelter, he provided his friend with game from the forest.

I gaze on calmy as The lady calls A girl named Katherine. Imagine my surprise when someone volunteers. Katherine. I roll the name on my tongue. The only time we met, she laughed in my face sneering down at my hunting skills. Asking about my family, how they were doing. She knew I was an orphan. I clench my fist. She hates me. I hate her. She's evil/ WHo on earth would volunteer for her. Then comes the 12 year old Tori Greenwood. Only 12 and already volunteering for a friend that will betray her ibn the end. One more, just one, and I will be free of the reaping.
"Jace Andrews" the lady calls. It takes a moment for me to register what she said. Me? BUt-->
I walk up to the stage, not happy with the prospect of being put into the arena with a 12-year old girl

I stood there, the scent of the sea that was drifting past my nose ever so inviting... but I needed to pay attention. Kaylee and Matthew both had their names in those bowls. Two of my younger siblings. The lady had just called the female tribute.
"Arriety Lyson!" she called out.
I saw the Peacekeepers approach a small redheaded girl, and just as they had grabbed her forearms, a voice rung out.
"I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute in place of Arriety Lyson."
I knew that voice... Lucia something.... Diller!
She was escorted up to the stage where she stood in a flowing green dress, waiting for the male tribute. The announcer reached her hand into the other bowl.
"Chandler Desotelle!" she hollered, pronouncing my last name wrong.
The Peacekeepers strutted over, and placed a firm grip on my forearms. I saw Matthew out of the corner of my eye. His hand was halfway in the air, his voice about to say those fateful words... when I gave a short shake of my head. I mouthed the word "No." He stepped back, his hand down, as the Peacekeepers pushed me onto the stage.

I stood there in shock my twin sister had just been chosen for the reaping and I barely knew her. How could I even abondOn her like that I think I've made a terrible mistake and I need to make it up to her but how I can't volunteer for her I'm a boy she is a girl and that would mean another girl would have to be chosen therefor an unfair judgement and id also get in trouble of Mum and Dad more Dad but yeah. My train of thought was distrupted when I heard the cry of "Mason Mathews". I went up to the stage confidently I had been preparing last year just in case and besides now I could protect and keep an eye on Lucka wether she knows I'm here for her or not. I smiled to myself maybe this wasn't a bad thing maybe it was for te better.

Weopon: A thin japanese sword.
Skill: Climbing trees, finding non-poisonous food, hiding, fighting with her sword, and running.
Backstory: Payton's older sister died of a mysterious illness when payton was a baby and her father died as well. Her mother is often tired and sick from workig all day and trying to help her kids so it falls on Payton's weak shoulders to take care of her 3 year old little brother and her older brother is a lot of trouble with the law so she constantly has to help him, making her viable to get in trouble with the law as well. She's trying as hard as she can to help her family. If she had to go somewhere it would mean her family would probably fall apart.
District: 8

Payton stares at the ground silently, making marks in the dirt with her sandals and feeling a cool breeze on her face, blowing her hair around her face. She looks up and for the first time really notices her surroundings. Millions of other kids and parents stand in front of the huge district eight reaping stage. Some of the kid's faces show worry and sadness and some show fear and anticipation. But very few faces of the kids around Payton show excitement. Payton glanced up at her mother and she suddenly felt intense panic slam into her. Payton loves her mother more than anything. She can't leave her! Payton started to let panic fear overtake her face and her mother noticed. She quickly blows a kiss to Payton and smiles at her, her expression filled with love and kindess. This is her way of saying that everything with be alright. Payton smiles back at her and then turns back to the stage. The sun flowed down on her back as the mayor walks out onto the immense stage. He introduces district eights previous victors and starts his long, rambling speech about the Great War and the downfall of District 13 and then finally he gets to the point and starts to call the names. He starts with the boy first as he started with the girl last year. He reaches in and pulls out a name. He calls it out and a boy slowly gets up and walks up to the stage slowly and stifly, as if he's frozen. He dumbly stares at the crowd as the mayor reaches into the girl bowl and plucks out a name.

"And the District Eight female tribute is..."

He unfolds the paper and blurts out the name.

"Payton Jones!"

Payton freezes as she hears the name. No. Not her, no, please not her. She can't leave! Her family would fall apart without her and if she dies...Oh God. She stares dumbly at the ground until someone gives her a slight push on the back and shocks her back to reality. She tries not to look at anyone as she walks up, but she hears her mothers all too familiar muffled sobs breaking through the silence. Around her she hears the dissapointing murmers that people always give off when a 12 year old is chosen for the Games. She feels tears streak down her cheeks as she walks up but she doesn't care. She climbs up onto the stage and looks down at her mother, locking eyes with her. "Take care of Ian." She mouths to her. Ian is her three year old little brother. And then she blows her mother a kiss. And her mother falls on the ground, sobs racking her body.

Payton wipes her eyes.

I walk numbly over to the stage, not believing what I just did. I just volunteered for the games. I had a one-in-million chance of surviving. I follow the lady as she ushers me towards the place where we will have an hour for farewells.

"Come along now, Tori."

At first, I feel like objecting. But then I realize there's no point--no point at all. Jace, the boy tribute, is older than me, and stronger. And there's no guarentee he won't kill me right away, just to get me out of the contest.

"In here now." someone tells me, pushing me into a room none to gently. She closes the door behind her. The door opens again, not 2 seconds later. It's Kate.

"Tori.." she says, tears in her eyes. "Why? You'll be killed!"

"I had to Kate," not recognizing my own voice.

She saw I meant it. "Win then, Tori," she says to me, wiping her eyes. "Win for me."

"I'll try my best," I say, swallowing.

"One more thing," she says, reaching into her pocket. "Take this, as your token." She hands me a pin. At first, I'm confused, for it has nothing on it. Then I turn it over, and gasp. It has my sword on it. All blanketed in unearthly light. It glows for real.

I look up, and Kate's gone. I patiently wait for the next visitor. After 10 minutes, my mother comes in, looking pale and weak. She just sits there, not saying anything, until her time is up. She walks unsteadily out the door. I hear a thud, and rush over to see what happened. Laying right in front of me is my mother, looking for all the world to see-- dead.

Backstory: Madison lives with a fine family. She's wealthy and has both parents. She has a twin brother named Cairo and has a great fascination with herself and protecting herself. She's works hard with her knives her many survival skills, from knowing which berries to eat to knowing how to bandage a broken arm. She's very much the no nonsense type.
District: 3

I walk up to the stage and stare at the sky above me, quiet and solemn. I twirl a knife around casually in my hand and glance over at my twin brother, Cairo. His shaggy brown hair and deep, grey eyes reflect his calm yet dangerous personality. I can tell he's mildly excited. He never gets really excited, he rarely even gets slightly excited, but today is the Reaping day, and Cairo's dreamed of getting reaped since he was 12.
I've always been pretty neutral when it comes to the Games. I mean, it's not like I dream of being reaped, but I wouldn't freak out over it like some kids do. I clench my knife tighter in my hand and nod at Cairo, wishing him luck. It's always been understood between me and him that it's every man for himself. If he gets reaped, of course I'll be worried for him. But it's not like I'd sacrifice my whole life by volunteering for him. That's just stupid.
He nods back, a smile flickering across his lips and then we both turn back to the stage, just as the mayor walks out, his fancy shoes making clicking and clacking noises across the wooden District Three stage and the most phony smile a human could possibly have plastered across his wide face.
He does his usual little speech about Panem's past and he calls up the past victors from District Three and a small group of older people walk up onto the stage. They all look quiet and serious, but they also have a sort of hanuted look about them, as if they're filtering through memories that they wish they could forget. They wish us all good luck with quiet murmers and serious voices, and then they're gone.
Finally the mayor invites Effie Trinket, the oddly happy and slightly creepy head of tributes, up onto the stage. Effie, with her bright pink hair and her skin like crumpled up paper from too many surgeries, prances onto the stage, a big grin on her overly cheery face. She says a few words to us, her voice annoyingly joyful, and then, finally, she shouts out, "Boys first!" And snatches out a piece of paper from the boy's bowl.
Cairo and I watch in anticipation as Effie called out the boy's name in her shrill, loud voice. It isn't Cairo.
I look at my brother. His eyes now hold nothing but severe dissapointment. I give him an, "Oh well, maybe next year." Look and a shrug. He nods back at me and then we turn back to Effie.
She grins and says, "Now for the ladies!" I lick my lips in anticipation as her long, pink nails snatch out a name. And then she shouts, "Madison Burke!"
Cairo and my heads both snap so that we're looking at each other. Cairo wears an expression I've never seen on him before. It's panic, mixed with a dash of fear. We both turn our heads away quickly and stare at the ground, not knowing how to deal with just one of us getting reaped. In our plans it was always both of us, together. But apparently, that's not going to happen.
I walk up to the stage quickly, a determined look on my face hiding the traces of fear that I was feeling.
I stand on the stage and look at Blue. He looks about a year older than me and tough. He's obviously very strong I can tell that, like me, he is a very good runner. I stare at him for awhile, taking him in, and then I nod to him, wishing him luck. I then stare at Cairo, lock eyes with him and smile sadly at him, nodding. Amazingly, he smiles and nods back.
Suddenly someone drags my arm and pulls me into a room that I will, apparently, wait for the train in.
No one visits me. No one. I thought that at least Cairo would come, but apparently he thought our exchanging looks were enough. I do what I always do when I feel upset. I stare at the floor and wait for sadness to turn to anger.
