We’ve never seen Rick behave as extreme as he did in the season four finale.

I think a lot of it was very much a guy making peace with himself. The fact that he has a brutality to himself and a humane side. It was very much an extreme situation - he thought his son was gonna be raped and murdered and everybody was dead. He found himself yet again at the edge of the moral precipice, and he jumped off and said, “I am willing to do this” for his friends.

He’s at his most calm. He’s the most complete Rick that we’ve seen for a long time. So much of the wrestling within this guy’s psyche was the moral pragmatic conundrum. And he’s just gone, “Okay.” Both of these are acceptable in his worldview.

He’s at peace with having a little madness inside him?

Without that, I don’t think they’d still be alive. That is just as much a part of me as the other side. That’s the most exciting thing this season - you meet a man who is trapped within the most ridiculous situation, the most dangerous situation he’s ever been in, and yet he is at his most confident and calm.

That’s what you’ve witnessed today. You’ve seen what we’ve been doing. I’m just interested in a guy that can keep reinventing his moral code to suit his needs. The is a guy who just makes sense of it. What I’m also interested in is when that comes up against other people in the group, or in the world - whether or not that’s gonna cause pain, conflict and retribution.
