Charlie was out of the hospital and lounging in front of the TV, watching baseball on ESPN. He looked completely healthy and according to him felt healthy. I guess it was the Azdi part of him that had helped him heal so well although Charlie denied having healing abilities. I sat seterusnya to him.
“Want anything?” I asked him.
“I’m alright,” he said, not taking his eyes off the batter that was running round the bases.
“I do not understand that sport,” I said, shaking my head clueless at the screen.
“It’s very simple. See that guy that’s just ran he-” Charlie launched into a big lecture/explanation about baseball and I just tuned out. I didn’t really care. I wasn’t a sport fan. I never had been. The closest I had come to a sport was when I help carry a football to the field in my old school. Whenever it came to Gym in England I forged a note excusing me from physical activities, begged another teacher to have me for that lesson atau just skived.
“Are anda even listening?”
I blinked and turned to Charlie.
“What?”
“I asked if anda were still seeing Edward.” Charlie was looking annoyed that I hadn’t been listening.
“Yes, I am,” I said. “Got a problem with that?”
“No,” Charlie forced an innocent voice. “It’s just anda guys are so different from each other.”
“Opposites attract.”
Charlie turned back to the screen and I stood up.
“Where are anda going?” he asked. His eyes looked slightly worried.
“Upstairs,” I stared at his brown eyes. Was he scared to be alone? atau was he scared that I would leave him and not come back?
“Oh, that’s ok.” He visibly relaxed and his eyes went back to the TV.
“Do anda want me to stay here with you?” I sat back down seterusnya to him.
“No,” he shook his head. “No, I just thought that anda were going to go out with him.”
Honestly, when was he ever going to stop this? If he was going to start his prejudice again with Edward, I would seriously fall out with him.
“Dad, if you’re going to start this crap again...”
“I never berkata anything!” Charlie went all defensive.
I stood up and walked in front of the TV.
“I thought anda were cool with me and Edward?”
“I never berkata anything!”
“You don’t have to! I can see it! When I stood up anda thought I was going to him. And if I was anda probably would have thrown a tantrum and stop me from going!”
Charlie folded his arms across his chest and I knew I was right. He might say he didn’t mind me seeing Edward but it looks like he still did.
“I am fine with anda seeing Edward,” he said, still with his arms folded. He looked kind of sullen. “I am not fine with anda being alone with him. I don’t want anda getting hurt. Do anda know what happens when a vampire bites you?”
“I am not going to get hurt,” I said. I felt like I had berkata this too many times in the last few weeks. “They won’t bite because they are vegetarians.”
“I am not talking about the Cullens. I am talking about other vampires.”
“There aren’t any other Vampires in Forks.”
“Vampires pass through here, Kayla. And they would get interested in the Cullens’ way of life. They have a utama here, they mingle with humans, they have jobs, go to public school and they don’t drink human blood.”
“I have nothing to fear from other vampires, I can take care of myself.”
Charlie sighed and stood up.
“There’s something I need to tell anda that anda don’t already know about yourself.”
He put his hands on my shoulders and stared straight into my green eyes.
“A vampire bite kills us.”
I frowned in confusion. That couldn’t happen. Everything I needed to know about Azdis and Supernatural creatures was already in my mind. As if it was there all along. This wasn’t there. Was Charlie trying to scare me?
“That’s not true,” I said, shaking my head. “I would know. I know everything about our culture.”
“It’s not something that affects our entire race, Kay,” he said. He removed his hands and turned away from me. He didn’t speak for a long time and I began to worry there was something important and he wasn’t going to tell me it. I reached out to his mind and I nearly screamed when I heard what was going through his mind.
“WE DIE!” I shouted at him. “WE DIE! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!”
Charlie turned around slowly and faced me.
“I didn’t want to tell you,” he looked somewhat sad. “I knew it would upset you.”
“Upset me?” I was beyond upset, I was nearing frantic. “You should have told me! I could have died!”
Charlie straightened up and tensed.
“What do anda mean anda could have died?”
Woops. I turned away, knowing I had berkata too much.
Charlie whipped me round with one hand and gripped tightly onto my arm.
“Did he try to bite you?” Charlie’s voice was low and came out like a growl.
“No!” I berkata quickly. “No! He would never. It’s just.... I ran into a newborn a couple of weeks ago.”
“When?”
“When anda found out about Edward.”
Charlie let go of my arm and he began to pace up and down the living-room. There was a silence that was only filled with the sound of cheering from the TV. Someone must have hit a utama run.
“Why didn’t anda tell me?” Charlie asked. He stopped pacing and looked at me.
“You had just like ruined my life!” I half shouted. “You punched Edward in the face and told me I couldn’t see him anymore! Like, I could drag anda away for a few saat to tell anda I nearly got eaten!”
He resumed his pacing and I watched him.
“So why do we die?” I asked him.
“It’s something in our blood,” Charlie spoke fast without stopping his pacing. “When the venom enters the bloodstream it contaminates it. It doesn’t do it in other Azdi atau humans but there is a defect in ours. The contaminated blood travels to the hati, tengah-tengah and, well to put it simply, the hati, tengah-tengah eats itself.”
“Eats itself?” My voice was barely audible. I was in shock. Those times when I could have been bitten. Jasper and the newborn in the forest. Jasper didn’t get close but the newborn’s teeth were on my neck. I wonder what would have killed me faster. My hati, tengah-tengah eating itself atau the vamp drinking my blood.
“I know this is a shock, Kayla,” Charlie began but I cut him off.
“SHOCK?” I screamed. “SHOCK? MY BOYFRIEND COULD KILL ME WITH ONE TINY LITTLE BITE AND anda TELL ME NOW?! I AM BEYOND SHOCK I AM GOING TO FREAK!”
“Kayla, calm down!”
“I DON’T THINK I CAN CALM DOWN! I’VE SPENT WEEKS TELLING EDWARD HE COULDN’T POSSIBLY HURT ME AND NOW anda SPRING THIS ON ME! IT WILL SEND HIM INTO DEPRESSION! HE WILL NEVER Ciuman ME AGAIN FOR FEAR OF KILLING ME!”
I stomped out of the living room and up the stairs to my room. I could alih incredibly fast so it had taken me less than five saat to do my stomping up to my room. Charlie could also alih as fast as me so it wasn’t surprising that as soon as I had slammed my door shut Charlie was knocking on it.
“Kayla, we have to talk.”
“No we don’t!”
“Look, anda have to tell me something.”
“What?”
“Is he being careful?” Charlie sounded slightly scared.
“What do anda mean?” I asked. I didn’t like hearing Charlie’s voice like that.
“He isn’t taking anda out with his family and flaunting you, is he? If other Vampires see anda then anda will be in trouble. Serious trouble.”
I opened the door and Charlie was standing there. His face looked faintly pained.
“What kind of trouble?”
“Have any of the Cullens ever told anda that anda smell different?”
I thought back but I couldn’t ever recall. Edward has berkata I was different, I remember that. But he didn’t say anything lebih than that. He wouldn’t specify what was different about me but I thought that it was the change that I had gone through. From human to Azdi.
“Edward berkata that I was different but he didn’t tell me what exactly,” I said. “I thought it was because of the change.”
Charlie nodded.
“It’s our blood that smells different,” Charlie said. “Vampires will want to know why anda smell so different and will want to kill anda to find out if anda taste different too.”
“So anda don’t want Edward taking me out where there might be vampires?”
“I don’t want anda hanging around with his family. Nomadic Vampires are known to travel through here from what Billy’s told me. Some even talk to Carlisle and if you’re there...”
He trailed off at the end and I think I understood what he was saying. My blood was lebih intriguing to Vampires than any other. No wonder Emmett and Jasper were having a hard time resisting it. Even Edward found it difficult but he was better at hiding it. I just had to be careful not to flaunt my blood but according to Charlie I don’t need it to be spilling out my veins to attract them.
What was I going to do?
