End of Chapter 5




“Can I touch your hand?” I glanced at his hands that were resting on his lap.
His eyebrows creased together in confusion at my question.
“I just want to know what your skin feels like,” I hurried to explain. “See, in my head it says that your skin should be cold and hard. I just want to know if it’s true.”
He smiled at my curiosity and placed a hand on my cheek. His skin was cold. I place my hand over his and could feel that his skin was silky to touch. I smiled and removed my hand from his.
“Thanks.” He removed his hand from my cheek and I stepped out the car. “Bye.”
“Wait,” he said.
I bent down so my head was in the car.
“You berkata it says in your head that my skin should be cold and hard?” he looked confused again.
“All this information has suddenly appeared in my memory,” I told him. “It must have happened in the change.”
He nodded.
“See anda tomorrow,” I waved at him, closing the car door.
“Yes,” he said

I was barely in the house five minit when i felt and heard the vibration of my mobile. I retrieved it from my jeans and looked at the screen. Charlie was calling me.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Kayla, where are you?” Charlie’s voice was rushed and breathless.
“I came home, I had a headache,” I replied. “What’s up?”
“Stay there,” Charlie said, and I heard a chair scrape back. “I’m coming to get you.”
“Why?” I asked, fear flaring up. “What’s wrong?”
“Just stay there, Kay,” Charlie repeated. I heard the jangling of keys and a door opening before Charlie hung up on me.
I stared at my mobile. What the hell was he on about? Why was he making me stay here? What had happened?
I paced the living room, waiting for Charlie to arrive. I tried not to think of all the awful things that might have happened. I cursed him. Why did he do this to me? Is he incapable of explaining things over the phone?
I heard Charlie’s police car before he pulled up in front of the house. I could get used to this super hearing. I went out to him.
“What’s wrong?” I asked him.
“Get in.” Was all he said.
I got in the car and shoved my seatbelt on.
“What’s going on?” I asked him.
He didn’t answer. He did a U-turn and drove in silence. If he wasn’t going to tell me anything I’ll find out my own way. I focused on Charlie’s mind, willing myself to hear his thoughts.
I didn’t hear any thoughts from Charlie. Only pictures. I was seeing these pictures of this man. He was tall and fair haired with bright blue eyes. There were pictures of him laughing, playing football, joking with friends. The seterusnya picture of this man i was not prepared for. He was pale and lifeless. His eyes wide open and staring. His throat was practically ripped out and it looked like he had been drained of all his blood. If I didn’t know better I would say it was a vampire attack. I nearly hit myself for thinking so stupidly.
Charlie pulled up outside a big house.
“Come on, Kayla.” He stepped out the car and I followed. He walked up a small path and straight through the front door. I followed, unsure what was happening.
I came into a broad hallway. There were pictures hung up on the wall. Some were paintings and some were family pictures. The man from Charlie’s mind was in the family foto-foto so I guessed this must be his house. The man had a wife and children.
Charlie continued through to the kitchen. He had to itik under police tape. I didn’t want to go any further but Charlie gestured me to go under. I did as he said, feeling slightly sick. I had an idea about what he was going to tunjuk me.
There was the man, lying on the tiled floor, exactly as he was in Charlie’s mind. There was some blood pooled around him. His own blood, I bet.
“Kayla,” Charlie said. “Are anda ok?”
“Sure,” I said, looking away from the man. “I’m great. It’s not like you’ve shown me a dead guy atau anything. There’s no reason for me to be feeling sick atau upset.”
“Chief Swan.”
Charlie and I both turned around. Standing behind us was a man in his late twenties. He was pale skinned with blond hair. I knew who this was without the alarm bells to warn me.
“Dr Cullen,” Charlie said. “Have anda examined the body?”
“Yes,” Dr Cullen answered. “I was just looking for you.”
Dr Cullen’s eyes glanced at me before looking back at Charlie. Charlie noticed Dr Cullen looking at me.
“This is my daughter, Kayla,” Charlie introduced.
“Is this really the place to bring her?” Dr Cullen asked.
“Your guess at the cause of death?” Charlie asked ignoring Dr Cullen’s question.
“Animal attack.”
“Kayla,” Charlie turned to me. “Your guess at cause of death.”
“Vampire.” I answered before I realised what I said. I clapped a hand over my mouth and stared wide-eyed at Dr Cullen.
“Vampire,” Dr Cullen laughed. “There’s no such thing.”
“Yes,” Charlie laughed. “No such thing. Kayla, be serious.”
Vampires in Forks,I heard Charlie think. How could this happen?
I let my hand drop from my mouth and I reached out to Dr Cullen’s mind.
Does she suspect us? i heard him think. Do we need to leave again?
