Mass Effect 2 final mission help? *SPOILER*

Okay, so in the final mission, I sent Legion through the shaft and Miranda as leader of the api, kebakaran team, right? All right, they both died. I looked it up later, and statistically speaking, that combination should have lived with their skill sets. They were both loyal to me, also. What the hell happened?
