He pins his identity on being a brother. Sam's loyal most of the time, but he also has his more independent moments (and plain badly written moments, like not looking for Dean at the start of S8, which I hate and still believe was wildly out of character - why couldn't they just have him say he'd assumed Dean had died?!!!)
