Winona Ryder confirms “Beetlejuice” sequel is in the works
For nearly two years it has been rumored a “Beetlejuice” sequel was a distinct possibility, but after Monday evening it is now a fact. “I think I can confirm it because Tim Burton did this interview … It was very hush-hush, top secret … I really don’t know much more about it than anyone else,” Winona Ryder said on a appearance in “Late Night with Seth Meyers.
The film is a horror comedy about Barbara and Adam Maitland, who haunt their home after dying in a tragic, yet humorous, car accident. When they’re unable to get the new tenants out of their home, they hire Beetlejuice, a spookster with his own sinister agenda, to do the job for them. Ryder, 43, commenced her long term relationship with Johnny Depp in the 1988 film, which also featured Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. Although the movie is nearly three decades old, Ryder still receives attention from youngsters due to her portrayal of teen goth queen Lydia Deetz.
“It must mean there’s something very sort of pure about it, in a weird way,” she said.
In October 2013, there was communication between Burton and Warner Bros. to begin work on a sequel to the cult classic. Burton added fuel to the fire last December when he discussed “Beetlejuice 2″ while promoting his latest project “Big Eyes,” in which Amy Adams played the lead role. “There is a script, and I would love to work with him again,” Burton said. “I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There’s something that’s cathartic and amazing about it. I think it’s closer than ever.”
The writers who were last reported to be attached to the screenplay were Seth Grahame-Smith, who wrote Burton’s Dark Shadows, and David Katzenberg.
