Fin held back a scream as she tore her eyes away from the creature’s gaze. She felt the api, kebakaran engulfing her fists and arms begin to weaken, and she strained to intensify it. I’m not scared she told herself. I’m not scared. I’m not scared. I’m not scared.
A piercing scream reverberated through the training room, which had fallen dead silent. The hollow sound echoed back and forth until it faded to a low hiss, buzzing in Fin’s ears. Another scream, this one louder, and Fin clapped her hands to her ears, panic racing through her veins. Okay, now I’m scared. Then, without warning, the world went black.
“What’s going on?!” It took Fin a minit to realize that the disembodied shriek was coming from her. She tried to light a flame, but it was snuffed out in an instant. Slowly, sounds from the room came to her. Screams, whispers, a muffled sobbing that she thought sounded like Aisling. She rubbed her eyes, trying in vain to wipe away the darkness. An eerie hiss filled the room, the dissonant sounds slowly forming into words.
“Forever racing raindrops, never reaching light.
Dreams will haunt, dreams will kill, dreams will always fight..”
Fin felt something warm gripping her, and opened her eyes, realizing that the darkness had dispersed slightly and she had fallen into someone’s arms. Eric’s, she decided. She would recognize his touch anywhere. She struggled to escape from his grip, but he held her tight and she let herself go limp. Pain was coursing through her body, her head ached--everything ached. When did that happen?
“Times turn, fates unwind, flames burn to ash,
The world crumbles, stability melts, mortal lives flash.”
Where were the words coming from? Did everyone else hear that sound? atau was she just delirious? She groaned, trying to block it out, but it reverberated through the room, pounding at the insides of her skull and grating at her eardrums.
“Forever chasing shadows, across the endless night,
Light is life, dark is death, but no firm line in sight
Ashes, ashes, blotting out the day,
Blurred life, erased hope, the world bleeds through gray.”
Circles of orange light danced across the room; Fin looked down and realized her fists had lit on fire. She slid out of Eric’s arms and stood seterusnya to the rest of her team, the flames growing stronger until the room was illuminated. It was then she realized that the sounds, the words, which sounded ominous, although she didn’t know what they meant, were not just in her head. Judging from the expressions on her teammates’ faces, they were hearing it too. And that horrifying creature, snakelike, yet with legs and gleaming claws, confirmed it as well. Fin clenched her fists, tensing her muscles in preparation to attack, finish the beast off once and for all. She glared at it, glared at its green-haired caretaker, at the rest of the intruders, but before she could strike, its eyes flashed red and she was frozen, paralyzed, a silent scream etched on her lips. As she felt her body go limp, dimly aware of Eric catching her once more, she heard the green-haired boy growl.
“Don’t. mess. with. Basilisk.”
“Noted,” she heard someone say, but the komen was ignored. Around her, Mercy and the other firecasters created a dinding of dancing flames, to provide lebih light, and Fin found that despite her paralysis, her brain seemed to be fully functional. It was scary, though, not being able to alih a muscle, not even blink.
“Traitors spurning traitors, Heroes losing faith,
When Friends break apart, death falsifies life: purpose is no longer safe.”
There it was again. It was definitely coming from Basilisk, atau whatever that...thing was called. It almost sounded like some sort of prophecy. Suddenly, without warning, the lights went on, and in that fleeting moment of temporary blindness, the intruders surged forward.
Fin could only watch as their leader, Tesla, who she vaguely remembered from stories that Aisling had told, seized a semi-conscious Aisling sejak the arm and started to drag her away. Someone, it sounded like Rowan, gave a defiant scream and knocked him down with a roundhouse kick to the neck. A small scuffle ensued, but ended quickly when Jackson smashed into Rowan with the back of his sword and wrenched Aisling free from the crowd of heroes, depositing her in Tesla’s arms. Tesla, smirking, slid a gun out of his tali pinggang and pressed it against her head.
“One move, and she dies immediately.”
Rowan crossed his arms, glaring at the older teen. “And if we don’t? She lives?” Brave, Fin thought. But Rowan had no idea who he was dealing with.
Tesla laughed. “Cute, but no. She dies either way. However,” he added, voice laced with venom, as Rowan was already opening his mouth to protest. “If anda give her up peacefully, no one else will have to die. Kaos only needs Aisling. But I’m not afraid to bring in lebih bodies if necessary.”
Rowan growled, but before he could attack, a awan of arms pulled him back. “Rowan, no!” Aisling called out, her voice weak and cracked. Tesla dug the end of the gun into her skin, causing glistening blood to trickle out and drip to the floor, and she quickly shut up.
“What’s it going to be?” Tesla asked, his voice dangerously cool. “Give her up atau fight? Either way she dies. The difference is whether you survive.”
The look of pain on Rowan’s face was unbearable. Fin wanted desperately to do something, to slaughter them all, but she was still paralyzed. All heads turned to Rowan, and he sighed, tears beading in his violet eyes. When he spoke, it was barely lebih than a whisper.
“Take her.”
Tesla grinned. “Wise choice, lover boy.” Before anyone could do anything, he pulled the trigger, and the gun clattered to the floor, Aisling’s body jerking once then hanging still, limp, in Tesla’s arms. “No!” Rowan screamed, but it was too late. A crack opened in the ground, but before the intruders left, the Basilisk’s eyes flashed once more.
“Forever racing raindrops, never reaching light,
Forever chasing shadows, across the endless night.”
Six intruders and one lifeless hero jumped into the crack; the earth shook, the dust obscuring her vision. When the smoke cleared, they were gone.
