\'Agent X\'s\' Other Half: Meet Carolyn Stotesbery
Next week, ‘Agent X’ welcomes back Pamela Richardson, the feisty ex-girlfriend of the TNT show’s titular hero. Why is she back and what is it like to play her? We asked actress Carolyn Stotesbery for some clues before Pamela returns.

fans saw Pamela, she was having a bad couple of days. Her boss got murdered, her fiancee turned out to be evil, and she had to be rescued by her ex-boyfriend.
But she’s not just the hero’s love interest. Her role in the story is more than that, and Carolyn discussed why she enjoys the character – and what we can expect from her when she comes back.
“I think the show is just really big, fun entertainment,” she said, “and it has also a deeper message which is very patriotic and about believing in America – and especially with Pamela Richardson being Agent X’s true love, believing in true love.
“I think there’s a lot of shows that are great and they kind of touch on a darker side of corruption. Not that we don’t have mystery and a lot going on, [but] I feel like the underpinnings of
is a really refreshing message. I think that’s what I was drawn to.”
NEXT ON HIDDEN REMOTE: ‘Agent X’ Finally Finds Its Stride
Naturally, the past between Pamela and John Case (Jeff Hephner) is a significant part of the show’s narrative. She’s the audience’s one clue to the personal life of our hero. How much was Carolyn told about their long and complicated history?
“I hope we get to explore the relationship more deeply,” she said. “But Blake Herron, who is the creator of the show, he’s very specific about the relationship and specific about Pamela’s past and Agent X’s past. Obviously there are things to be explored, but I had a good bearing of what I went through.
“My father committing suicide was revealed to me in episode two, and that was really what drove the character for me, was wanting to know what happened to my father,” she continued, “and then once Agent X breaks up with me, wanting to know why he broke up with me.
“When we’re reunited, it’s a lot of wanting to know what I don’t know. The secrets, the mystery, which is what Washington is all about. What is the truth of the world? What is is the truth of this man? What is the truth of my father?
“Agent X has kind of a suicidal job, so I think Pamela’s really attracted to the danger that she wants to uncover and see what’s going on underneath. They’re tied in a way, but it’s hard to have a relationship with somebody that’s in a secret job.”
Yet what makes her unique is that she also serves the story in a constructive way. She’s not the love interest strictly to have a love interest, or for that one-off episode where the hero inexplicably goes doe-eyed (and often dense) over their other half. Pamela contributes to the
world on her own merit, while the history between her and John actually informs the viewer’s understanding of both characters. When she shows up, it’s something to get excited about.
Pamela might have a big role to play in next week’s episode, now that John has been kidnapped. “I think you’ll see a side of Pamela that you’ve never seen before and I think that’s going to be fun for everyone,” Carolyn teased, “and out of what I’ve seen so far, it’s the most bombastic episode of the series in my opinion.”
is one of the most fun shows on TV, and Carolyn told us that it’s just as much fun to make the show as it is to watch it, explaining that the cast and crew were always supportive and that she had an excellent on-screen partner.
“He’s just a down to earth guy, that it was really to kind of easy to get into the Punch and Judy of the relationship,” she said of working with Hephner. “He’s really good at improv, which I come from a Second City, Improv Olympics background, so I think in the first episode we were really kind of getting to know how each other worked…It started to flow in a good way, and you’ll see it unfold even more as we go.
“There’s a lot of humor in that scene in the car, where we go into the curio shop,” she continued. “I think that’s the defining moment in their relationship. You see that they have this banter that is really unique and that he doesn’t have with anyone else. A lot of the other women in the show are serious stuff and [Pamela] gets the levity of Agent X.”
Speaking of the women of the series, “Sharon Stone has above and beyond just showed up for the show on Twitter, in interviews and it’s really exciting to see,” Carolyn added. “I think really what’s occurring with our show is that like a good book, people are starting to get wrapped up in the characters and it takes time to get to know them.
“So for her to watch that happen, and to live tweet every week, and be so engaged with the show and the people that are fans, it’s inspiring to me to see someone at that level really care about where the show is going and the cast and the crew…It’s really nice to be on a show where people are talented, but they’re also amazing human beings.”
Outside of the show, Carolyn is a woman of many talents. She co-starred in the upcoming film
with Eric Dane, is writing two pilots and producing a third series for FX called
, based off the play of the same name. You can learn more about all of her projects at her website.
returns for a second season: get involved in the action, possibly with a fight against
Olga. “She’s a force to be reckoned with,” Carolyn said, “and I think it’s going to be fun to find out more about the intellectual side of fighting, and to see how Pamela might be able to escape.”
Fingers crossed that we see that – and more of Carolyn – in a second season next fall.  With her performance, she’s certainly redefining what it means to play the love interest, as
continues to make big strides within the action genre.
