Angel gives up his "Pinoccio" dream by signing away the possibilty (the Shanshu Prophecy), in order to gain the confidence and ultimately kill all the members of the Black Thorn; And knows & tells Spike, that they don't make it through this, they (Wesley, Allyria, Gunn, Spike & Angel) all die at the end.
