‘The Vampire Diaries’ Boss Says A Major ‘Delena Cliffhanger’ Is Coming
Caroline Dries gives us the dirt on Delena and the Gemini Coven.
Tonight (December 11), months of ’90s purgatory, Delena separation, and Gemini Coven insanity will finally culminate in the midseason finale of “The Vampire Diaries.” Writer and executive producer Caroline Dries already told us that the festive holiday outing, “Christmas Through Your Eyes,” would feature a whole lot of Stefan and Caroline action, but fans of the show’s
will-they-or-won’t-they couple (they will) should be pumped too — because the story’s “A” plot will be all about Delena.
“Damon is going to continue his quest to try to bring Bonnie back,” Dries told MTV News over the phone. “He and Elena are working together to do that; she’s still very much in the forefront of their mind. Elena is going to continue to be wresting with these feelings for Damon that she continues to have — even though she’s compelled him away they keep popping back up. So she’s trying to figure out where they actually stand.”
While Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) plot to bring Bonnie (Kat Graham) back in modern-ish times, Bon-Bon herself will be throwing herself a Christmas party for one over in ’90s purgatory. However, Dries said that the biggest moments of the episode will be all about Kai (Chris Wood) — and that his actions will have an affect on the show’s biggest power couple.
“We have a bit of a Delena cliffhanger,” she said. “Kai makes a move in this episode that will have a lasting affect on everyone — including himself — that will put everyone in harm’s way. There will be a mini silver lining to what he does, but he proves that he’s the villain of the season in this episode.”
We have a small suspicion that this silver lining might involve the spell in Mystic Falls — as Dries said that the cursed town line will “become a major part of the cliffhanger” — but either way, don’t count on the Gemini Coven storyline disappearing anytime soon.
“[Kai\'s story] will not be wrapped up in the midseason finale, it’s going to continue to be the backbone of the mythology of the rest of the season,” Dries explained. “A lot of new stories are going to be spun out of it. We’re going to continue to see Kai as a villain, as he tries to complete his quest, which is ‘I want to merge with my twin sister Jo, and become leader of the coven.’ ”
eventually play out onscreen — “it’s not just a tease” — but in the meantime, our jolly band of heroes will also have a second, mini-bad to deal with while Kai wreaks his witchy havoc: Enzo (Michael Malarkey). And Matt (Zach Roerig) will abandon his good guy routine when he decides to be the one to kill him.
“There’s going to be fallout in the Enzo/Matt dynamic, since Enzo now knows that Matt’s trying to kill him,” Dries said. “Enzo is the mini-bad of the season. He has a very specific vendetta against Stefan. We’ll start to peel back Enzo’s layers – we know very little about him, besides the fact that he was Damon’s cellmate. We start to understand where he came from, how he turned into a vampire, who sired him, why he is who he is. As the season progresses down the line, we’ll get into his head a little bit more.”
