85 percent of the time, I like to think the world's a wonderful place. we have tecnology and nature all rolled into one delicious sushi-package, we all have different place to visit and new things to learn. most of the time, the world's a very pleasent, innocent place to be. But 15 percent of the time, horrible things happen. people crash planes into buildings, tecnology is faulty, nature is being destroyed and the odd teenager sometimes drops a baby bomb on her parents and boyfriend. but only very ocassionally...

Peggy McIntosh, author of "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack"
From Peggy McIntosh's artikel available in full link. The rest of this artikel will be directly quoted from that. I telah diposkan the whole link as well, but for the tl;dr crowd, this is the meat and potatoes of it.

My schooling gave me no training in seeing myself as an oppressor, as an unfairly advantaged person, atau as a participant in a damaged culture. I was taught to see myself as an individual whose moral state depended on her individual moral will. My schooling followed the pattern my colleague Elizabeth Minnich has pointed out: whites are taught to think of their lives as morally neutral, normative,...

On and off for the past several years, I've been working on a bunch of artikel-artikel here on Fanpop: interviews (so many interviews....), comic articles, reviews, and various "What is..." explanatory articles. One of the ones on the back burner has been the "What is Debate?" article, and since I haven't finished that, I have to summarize some basic points about debate:

1) Debat is all about using arguments to support a position, thesis atau statement.
2) Debat requires opposition: at least two sides arguing the truth atau fallacy of the thesis.
3) Debat requires an audience to judge the effectiveness...

So I recently (and perhaps mistakenly) Lost my temper in a thread here on Fanpop. I'd rather not link to it, as it wasn't my finest jam and I perhaps embarrassed myself.

I will say that yes, it was about Obama.

I will also say that no, it wasn't a logical discussion about Obama.

Let me begin sejak saying that I like Obama-- but I know he isn't perfect. I am open to criticism, and actually complimented (in a komen to my parents) right-wing politicians who held up their counter-health care proposal in silent protest during a speech on the topic. I complimented them because they were being dignified...

anda may be asking yourself right now, how can Evolution be a religion? atau Creation a science? Such small questions, with huge answers.

First, anda must understand me. I believe where the facts lie, that the truth is with that. Facts come first, then faith. (Yes, anda need faith for both!)

Now mind you, sometimes facts are wrong. Facts used to say that the world was flat. But that fact was proven wrong.

Back to the questions. Evolution and Creation.
Misunderstandings on both sides have let many frustrated with arguments and conflicts. If we first get an understanding of where the other is coming...

Just kidding. Below are a few soalan I’ve attempted to answer about the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC). This isn’t formal research, just a few points that I believe need to be brought to attention.

What is this ‘Westboro Baptist Church’ anda speak of?
The fine folks at Wikipedia have summarized that in far fewer words than I ever could have, so if anda are unfamiliar with the WBC, I would suggest Membaca the first paragraph link.

How does a church from Kansas have enough money to send members to protest all over the US?
Since the WBC classifies itself as a church, they are not required...

First of all, let me preface this artikel sejak saying that I am far from an expert on Islam. The only thing that qualifies me to write this artikel is a handful of research and experience with Muslims. I feel that maybe a Muslim would be better equipped to tackle this issue, however it is so important to me that the Western World understand the difference between Islam and Radical Islam that I felt compelled to write this article.

In this article, I will clarify that normal Islam is as peaceful as any other mainstream religion, like Judaism and Christianity. However, that does not mean that radical...

Censorship is probably my kegemaran thing to Debat about. So I wanted to type an artikel about the issue.

For one it's super annoying. The obnoxious beeping mid-verse in some songs is really irksome to listen too. Small pauses aren't as bad, but still. Censorship can really ruin a good song. As for TV I understand it lebih with censoring anatomy should children be watching (I'll address that in a minute) but censoring the finger atau words that characters/people say on TV follows the same thing as above the bleeping is annoying and the finger, I personally don't take offense to it.

About the whole...

I believe in debate, discussion, and discourse. I believe in listening. I believe in multiple sides to every issue. I believe everyone is worth listening to. I believe there can be fault on "all sides," and that we can all be guilty of misunderstanding each other.

I do not extend these courtesies to racists.

Ideas are dangerous. They are wonderful and they are disastrous. They can be used and misused as weapons atau agents of peace. But when anda are met with a truly deadly weapon, giving it the benefit of the doubt and letting it do its thing will get anda and many others killed.

When it comes to...

Idk if anyone’s noticed (lol) but I’m filthy mad about this election. Not just because of Trump himself, but because the whole thing represents, better than anything, one of the world’s most significant problem in baru-baru ini years. We are moving away from our Enlightenment ideals - tolerance, progress, and liberty - with fanfare. Under the guise of saving western culture, we are threatening its core principles. We are neglecting the lessons of history that millions fought and died for: authoritarianism is a dangerous (yet insidious) thing, vilification of minority groups is wrong (demonstrated,...

When I created this spot nearly a tahun ago, my intention was to create a forum for the respectable exchange of ideas among educated individuals. To my great excitement, I got exactly that: multifaceted individuals who knew where they stood but were curious to learn about others and make their own ideas known. There were the occasional people who would refuse to listen and only talk, and there were the occasional users who would refuse to acknowledge a good point against them. But over all, I've enjoyed our lively discussions.

For a time, the Debat spot was lacking in any real "debate." There...

PETA – Is It Really Ethical?

Who would think twice about questioning the motive of a nonprofit animal-loving organization with the word “ethical” in its title? The word “ethical” usually refers to someone who is doing the right thing. After all, who wouldn’t want to treat Haiwan ethically?

I sat behind an avid PETA supporter one tahun in my high school English class. PETA, as I was later informed, was an acronym for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and was an organization dedicated to saving Haiwan and promoting veganism....

Note: It's kind of late at night so this is a bit rushed & disorganized (especially regarding the points about Depp, Rowling, and DeLisle) so if anyone needs any clarification atau lebih context atau would like to hear lebih in depth about my personal feelings on each case, feel free to ask.

So this is inspired sejak a baru-baru ini experience that I had with batal culture atau an attempt at it. I have always been against batal culture mostly because I've had several bad experiences with it over stuff that was blown way out of proportion. It was used as a humiliation tactic and a means to try to kick me...

Imagine that anda are in a boat. There are other people in your boat. There is also one person in the water. Allowing this person to get onto your bot will not sink the boat. Everyone could easily fit comfortably. But still, there is a person in the water.

Now, if this person was only in the water for a short time, then yes, saying, "Hey, guys, lend me a hand onto your boat?" is probably exactly what she would do. But imagine this person has been in the water for hours. And imagine that it was other people in the bot that pushed her in there. Not you, of course. anda didn't push her in. But...

So being as math is the bane of my existence right now and I've finally snapped and nothing is left of my motivation in regards to math but a manifestation of pure rage and anger I am going to rant lebih about how much I hate math. So being as pahit about math as I've grown to be, I've done quite a bit of research...

I've been disheartened to hear rhetoric and see actions in the media lately that tunjuk me just how appallingly sexist our so-called "modern" and progressive society still is.

Yes, I'm calling sexism on this one, and no, that's not a word I wave around carelessly.

I'm calling sexism because a number of women's issues have come up in the public forum lately, and no one seems to care A) what women think about that atau B) perspectives on issues that aren't fifty years old. I recently telah diposkan link which details exactly how offensive these conversations are.

Hi, I'm Cinders. Maybe We Haven't Met.

First of all, allow me to introduce myself. I'm an old-hat Fanpopper who joined this site at the tender age of nineteen. I was an open-minded college student at the time, looking for a place to geek out about things I love. One thing I loved was Debat and discourse. I loved hearing multiple sides and perspectives to arguments, because I know there's always a side I...

There's been a lot of Debat in this spot on the general idea of progressive "softies" who need "safe spaces" to avoid being "triggered."

The talk of these kinds of people generally devolves into hyperbolized stereotypes of wimpy college students using it as an excuse not to do their homework, for example. Acronyms like "SJWs" get thrown around, and people express their frustration about feeling like they're walking on egg shells, atau censored, atau having to cater to other people's over-sensitivity in order to avoid being accused of an "ism" of some sort atau another. People feel like they're being...
