AudreyFreak picked Mulan:
I wish Ariel would go already. I can hardly think of any Sue traits she's got but I can write a list on Mulan's (though Crazy Rawr already did).

And really, the stans rigging Mulan's votes need to stop. I get you love Mulan but 1) having some Sue traits isn't an insult to her glorious person so you all can chill out, and 2) just rigging the polls with extra accounts or whatever is NOT MAKING HER WIN. As I say in all my countdown polls, no votes without comments count! Yeesh.

She fits Mary Sue traits criteria such as making 'wrong' decision by going to the war without her parents' consent, and yet saving China by breaking her captain's warning and also becoming the star in the base camp although she's new and unlearned.

I don't think either of them are too much like a Mary Sue :/ But if I had to pick, I would say Ariel... I think how she has such a beautifully perfect voice is what makes her a bit more of a Sue than Mulan for me.

Silverrose1991 picked Mulan:
She's the do-it-all kind of girl: she disguises herself as a soldier, fights in the army, defeats Shan Yu and even gets a potential future husband in the end.

Tygers_Eye picked Ariel:
By far.

Ariel: treats everyone like an afterthought at best but still has people fawning all over her and risking themselves to help her at every turn. She constantly gets praised for her beauty and voice, and has people fawning all over her from the first moment they hear/see (Eric and Grims). The only people that ever say "boo" to her are treated as irredeemably evil (Ursula) or self important (Triton and Sebastian), and as just *not understanding* how special, important, and deserving she is of getting what she wants. If they aren't given theirs because they're irredeemably evil (like Ursula), then they realize THEY were wrong and they should just give her what she wants (Sebastian and Triton), without her ever having to apologize or earn it.

For example: even though Ariel consistently caused problems for Sebastian, didn't feel sorry about it, didn't apologize for it, and didn't show ANY concern for his problems or well-being, her making a sad face when he was about to tell her father suddenly prompted him to "realize" that the human world was so important to her that he should put his well-being on the line for her (both by risking her father's wrath and risking the dangers of the human world) because, apparently, Ariel's happiness is more important than his life... even though she would NEVER have done the same for him had the roles been reversed.

Likewise, Ariel disobeyed her father at every turn, her stunt with Ursula put the whole kingdom in danger, and she never once apologized for disobeying, worrying, or endangering everyone. After all, SHE never did anything wrong, and SHE was in the right the whole time. However, HE "realized" that HE was wrong, and that she deserved everything she wanted just for wanting it.

According to "The Little Mermaid," Ariel being beautiful and having a pretty singing voice is an acceptable substitute for sound judgement and moral character. She deserves to get whatever she wants just for wanting it, and can worry, inconvenience, hurt, and even endanger others because it's in pursuit of what she wants, therefore she deserves it. She can treat everyone like the bubbles behind her fins as she swims and they'll STILL put their lives on hold and even risk their lives to help her because, hey, she's Just That Important.

Bite me.

Mulan, on the other hand, has legitimate problems, isn't treated as being any more beautiful or special than anyone else, people don't throw themselves over her to help even if she is nice to them (really, her family are the only ones that care about her, the ancestors want to bring her back just to save the family name, and Mushu doesn't come to like her until after they spend at least 3 weeks and a war together), and she only gets praised for her accomplishments AFTER she's put in the blood, sweat and tears to earn it. (Defeating the Huns and saving China and all.)

Neither are Mary Sues, but Mulan more so. On the last poll, I stated my reasons with the criteria more descriptively.

Mulan can do any sort of good, worthy talent there is. She is only bad at "silly" unimportant things like pouring tea, and that is the cricket's fault, not even her own.

Ariel is a completely well-rounded, flawed character who makes many bad decisions and the movie is good about letting you see that. :)

Bridget_J picked Ariel:
1)She has a unique singing voice, is a mermaid.
2)Never seems to get in trouble for her actions ( after she defeated Ursula, her Dad gave her human legs and didn't once say anything about her making a deal with a sea witch)
3)Everyone likes her except for the evil villain
4)Good fashion sense even in rags or a seashell bra
5)willing to risk her life for someone she just met ( Eric)

AudreyFreak picked Mulan:
^I don't think her voice is very unique. If you mean in the movie, I thought that was BECAUSE she's a mermaid. Mermaids in the myths have magical singing voices. Sebastian doesn't seem to like her, but he loves her, and Triton yells at her all the time.

5) isn't quite what the MS traits mean. Ariel saves him because she loves him (and thinks he's hot), whereas the Mary Sue saves everyone because she's ~so~ generous and ~so~ brave.

Ariel has a lot of flaws but nobody minds them in the movie. Everything ends up perfect for her. But none of them are really Mary sues.

Mulan is more like a Mary Sue than Ariel (not that I dislike her, I still like her). CRaZy_rawR already explained in the previous round and I agreed with her.
