This is the Institute in Brooklyn. It is an old gothic cathedral that is run by the Lightwoods. The Lightwoods live in the Institute full time but others can live there if they are approved to by the Lightwoods. Only Shadowhunters can open the doors.

Elain walked back up to the institute and went inside. She walked up the stairs to her room and plopped down on the bed.

Elain smirked and looked at him. She raised her eyebrows and, without giving it a second thought, kissed him long and hard before scrambling off her bed and running down the stairs. She opened the door and hurried out, climbing into her car.
