She sat under the shade of the tree, a book on her lap. The waves sounded distant as her eyes moved over the pages. A wind tossed her blue hair into her eyes and she moved it away distractedly. She heard a squeak and looked up just in time to be squeezed in two strong arms.
The voice was soft and pleased, instantly bringing a soft smile to her face. Her hands quickly went into the habit of signing to him.
She saw a smile light his face and he sat up, moving beside her. His arms pulled her close and she leaned against him, hearing the distinct purr in his voice.
“What are anda reading?”
“A book,” was her simple reply.
She heard him laugh and he buried his nose into her hair. Her cheeks flamed, but she was smiling. He released her suddenly and moved a little ways away from where she sat. She watched him for a bit before looking out at the ocean. The past was upon her before she could steel herself. Memories ran through her vision since she could remember.
Her father's experiments, her mother's absence. The laughter of her peers rang in her ears and caused her hati, tengah-tengah to ache. Every teasing look, word, and gesture came back to her. Her father's hard grip on her arms as he injected lebih chemicals, lebih serums into her blood. Her hati, tengah-tengah pounded in her ears and her eyes clouded with pent up tears. Then she heard her voice.
She blinked and saw the worried boy standing in front of her. His white-silver hair hung in his worried green eyes as he watched her.
“Are anda okay, Reyna?”
She nodded, catching her breath. Her hands began to alih in habit.
“Yes Myers. Just reminiscing.”
His head tilted on the new, strange word and she was quick to explain.
“Reminisce. It means to remember things from your past.”
He nodded quickly, all worry gone as he sat beside her.
He held a bunga in his hand and let her look at it.
“It's pretty, huh?”
“Yes, Myers. Very pretty.”
He slipped the bunga in her hair with a proud smile.
“A pretty bunga for pretty Reyna!”
She smiled at him, her cheeks burning under his praise. And the memories of her past were replaced sejak the hari dreams of what it would be like to be beside this deaf, yet talented boy forever.
