January 5th marks a momentous hari in the lives of every DE shipper across the world. (Actually, it's January 6th for me, because I live in the UK). Have anda calmed down yet, atau are anda still buzzed and freaking out? I suspect it's the latter.
Where to begin? The DE fandom had heard so many whispers that something big would happen in 3x10 in the weeks leading up to January 5th, that I think we were all kind of anxiously expecting/waiting for THE KISS. After all, DE must be the only ship on TV who have had trick kisses (1x22), unreciprocated kisses (2x01), and almost kisses (3x02 and 3x06), and deathbed kisses (2x22), but never a mutual kiss, and that is quite unusual. Maybe that's why there were so many 'spoilers' floating around about 3x10. I mean, honestly, it was probably the worst kept secret in the history of TVD spoilers. It was almost as if the writers WANTED us to find out in advance. The night the episode aired, I felt lebih nervous than excited. What if the spoilers were misleading? What if the episode ended in hearbreak? My emotions were all over the place. It turns out, 3x10 'The New Deal' was perhaps the best episode for DE to date. It was drop. Dead. EPIC. There's good, great, amazing, epic and now, we have drop dead epic, a phrase I invented to describe something that's off the charts in epicness.

When Damon cupped Elena's face in his hands, it reminded me a little of the end scene in 3x02 'The Hybrid', and the "We'll survive this," moment in 3x09. I also loved that when Elena tells Damon she made a deal with Klaus, Damon's first concern is for Elena's safety, ("She's gonna come in here and try and kill you".) He doesn't get angry at her and yell "How could anda be so stupid!" Elena is obviously very shaken and deeply upset, and even though she tries not to tunjuk it, Damon knows how she's feeling and seeks to reassure her.
The porch scene
"Thank you...Not just for this Damon, for everything. I don't know what I would do if anda weren't here."
Now we come to it. Damon has become an integral part of Elena's life. He's become one of her best friends. He has saved her, helped her, scolded her, road-tripped with her, been there for her in good times and the worst of times, and above all, he's loved her. Damon has never heard Elena reveal how much he means to her...until now. And he could have taken this as his cue to go in for the kiss, he could have pushed the issue of Stefan to one side, but he didn't. Because DE's relationship is 100 percent real, and is built on honesty and trust, Damon tells her the truth about Stefan's 'betrayal'; "He saved Klaus to save me."
The KISS
"I thought for one saat that I wouldn't have to feel guilty anymore."
"What are anda talking about? Guilty for what?"
"For wanting what I want."
I almost fell off my chair when I saw this bit. anda know, it's interesting that even though Damon struggles with his humanity, he never seems to falter when it comes to expressing his feelings for Elena. He is always so honest and straight ke hadapan about it. He never hides, atau leaves anda guessing, atau says things that make anda wonder what he meant when he berkata something, atau plays games to gain the upper hand. He's the 'bad boy' vampire of Mystic Falls with a black hati, tengah-tengah that was made new when he met the girl of his dreams, but can't have her atau do anything about it because she was his brother's first.
"I know. Believe me. Brother's girl and all." And he walks away, because there's nothing lebih to be said. But on the porch steps, he reconsiders his actions. "If I'm going to feel guilty about something, I'm going to feel guilty about this." And he kisses her.
I don't know if anyone else caught this, but I thought of parallels with 1X09: "When it's real anda can't walk away!" Elena shouts in desperation at Stefan's disappearing back. It's a quote that has stuck for DE shippers, even though it was used in an SE scene. In spite of Damon's loyalty to Stefan, he knows his Cinta for Elena, and what they have together is real, and he can't walk away from her without Ciuman her. Elena doesn't pull away, atau make any attempt to stop him atau break off from it. She puts her hand over his as they kiss. It might not be the passionate make-out session some viewers were hoping for, but I think it was more, because it was a Ciuman that has grown from 2 people's feelings for each other, not lust. It's a moment that people had been waiting for for so long, and it was everything we wanted to see.

Quite a few peminat-peminat on YouTube have dikomen that there are parallels between DE and SE in the lyrics of the song; 'One door swinging open' symbolising Damon/DE, and 'one door swinging closed' symbolising Stefan/SE. Similarly, 'holding on' could refer to DE, and 'letting go' refer to the ending of SE, something that can be paralleled in the 'hands' scene of 2x20. "I can't lose you", "You won't", hand-clasp between DE, and the "Close your eyes" hand-release between SE. I know that there are some DE peminat-peminat who are nervous that the Ciuman in 3x10 is only a one-time thing, but personally, I don't think it is. Before the episode aired, I was a bit afraid that before atau after the kiss, Damon atau Elena (probably Damon), would give a speech about how they can't be together because of Stefan, but I never got the impression that the Ciuman signalled goodbye. Damon does not look the least bit remorseful atau regretful about what he's done. Elena is speechles, and seems unable to move. There will be many lebih kisses to follow, of that I am sure. After all, DE are not JUST EPIC. They are DROP DEAD EPIC.
