She's a heroine, but not in the traditional sense. Her story arc is more about overcoming communication issues than about defeating a bad guy.

Merida CAUSES the situation to get worse, not better.

Merida's brothers provide diversion so Merida and Elinor can escape Fergus.

Elinor ( in bear form) covers Merida after Merida dumps everything into the witch's cauldron, and the whole house explodes.

Elinor plucks Merida out of the air and away from Mor'du, after Merida falls into the pit/old throne room.

Merida's brothers free Merida from a locked room.

Elinor pounds Mor'du against the rock pillar and ultimately kills him.

Translation: yes, Merida is the queen of miscommunication. All she does is sew back the rip in a tapestry she should never have destroyed. I find Merida to be a character study. Merida is more of a damsel/anti-heroine than an actual heroine. But this was a change from Disney providing us steady heroines like they did before. It was unique to see one of the princesses mess up spectacularly, save practically nobody, and then pick up the pieces and try to put them all back together.

I have to agree with BelleRose829. I don't see how Merida is a damsel. Yes she was saved by her mother as a bear, but it doesn't make her a damsel. She's a heroine.

@maidoforleans-- I made a countdown awhile ago of "bravest princess", I suppose you could do a countdown on who best defines heroine or something, but the predictable answer is going to be mulan. For me I just prefer countdowns where it's not an obvious order. mulan will win, then pocahontas, and the classics will be at the bottom.
