Epik High Talks To MTV Iggy About The Current State Of Korean Hip-Hop

On March 20, the members of Epik High sat down for a candid MTV Iggy interview.

The interview and photo shoot were held after the trio delivered their headlining performance at SXSW 2015 in Austin, Texas for the event K-Pop Night Out at Elysium.

Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz donned cowboy hats from the local store, Hatbox, after the interview which explored the current state of Korean hip-hop, the convergence of neophyte and veteran rappers and Epik High’s mission to foster new artists.

The group\'s frontman Tablo delivered his perspective on the trend of idol group rappers and veteran artists, as exhibited on their critically-acclaimed 2014 hit “Born Hater.”

"A lot of the so-called veteran rappers stay away from the major [label] scene," Tablo said.

"We think all of those borders are completely meaningless. We just jammed them all into a song and it worked out as we planned."

Epik High emerged from the Korean underground scene and continue to remain strongly tied to South Korea\'s independent hip-hop scene. Tablo touched upon the goals of his recently announced sub-label High Ground.

"Epik High has been very blessed with that because we\'ve been around for a long time," Tablo said.

"We\'ve been very lucky. We wish that some of these other acts could get out. We are going to help them do that. We are trying to expand what we are doing."

YG Entertainment and Epik High have recently publicized the new High Ground label. Tablo recently discussed the sub-label during his radio program, Tablo’s Dreaming Radio.

“Epik High will remain as YG artists," he said. "I will manage and be a partner for the new label, as a way for me to help other artists.”
