You've likely never even heard of your stepbrother or sister before your father or mother started that relationship.

I can understand though why some people would see it as awkward though.

It's not incest but you do not see people in society (polite or otherwise) doing this. They have now become family (even if not by blood), therefore they are supposed to be treated as family, not an interbreeding one because it would get complicated (and yes, be awkward). Technically then, you could sleep with your step-dad or step-mom too then right? Cheating but not incest. Not wrong? Is that proper where someone else lives? I really don't think so.
