The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials Receives Green Light
Celebeat, has announced they have given the official green-light for the upcoming film, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, the second part to the story of Thomas and the challenges he faces within the dystopian world. The movie is said to release on September 28, 2015, which means production has already begun or is nearing completion at this point. However, there are still a few more months to go before the film hits theaters.
According to the report, Wes Ball will once again reprise his role in the director’s chair for the follow-up movie. The sequel to the hit film, The Maze Runner, will be a continuation of what was told in 16-year-old Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the Gladers at the Maze’s story. The first film was a box office success, which left little to no doubt that a sequel would be happening. In fact, many actors have already signed on for the second film.
T.S. Nowlin, screenwriter for the young adult series, wrote the sequel’s screenplay based off of the stories written about in the fantasy novels by author James Dashner. The Maze Runner is an entire trilogy, so we can expect another film or two after Scorch Trials releases in theaters.
According to the plot of Scorch Trials, Thomas and the Gladers will have escaped from the maze, as seen in the first film, and are filed into a dormitory to await their second challenge. Clues regarding the powerful organization, known simply as W.C.K.D., are throughout the world, and the crew must attempt to figure out what is really happening to them. This time around, their journey will bring them to the Scorch, a landscape filled with obstacles that can barely comprehend. Resistance fighters will make an appearance, teaming up with the young teenagers to take on the forces of the W.C.K.D.
Returning cast members, besides Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, include Kaya Scodelario as Teresa Agnes, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt, Ki Hong Lee as Minho, Alexander Flores as Winston, Dexter Drayden as Frypan, Randall D. Cunningham as Clint, and Patricia Clarkson as Ava Paige. New cast members include Rosa Salazar as Brenda, Giancarlo Esposito as Jorge, Aidan Gillen as Jason/Rat-Man, Nathalie Emmanuel as Harriet, Jacob Lofland as Aris Jones, Barry Pepper as Vince, and Lili Taylor as Mary Cooper.
The Maze Runner saw commercial success, growing over $340 million worldwide off of its budget of just $34 million. Favorable reviews helped push it into the eyes of new audiences, which in return ensures the upcoming sequel was inevitable.
