LOS ANGELES – This week, the sometime Capt. Kirk Chris Pine took a break from yet another new superhero franchise, Wonder Woman, to promote a film that has realistically no chance of a sequel.
That would be Disney’s The Finest Hours, the tale of a 1952 Coast Guard rescue of the crew of a tanker that split in half in a winter hurricane off the coast of Chatham, Massachusetts. Some 62 years later, it’s still considered the Coast Guard’s most spectacular rescue.
“I’m just happy to work,” Pine said. “But it is a rarity, a big studio spending $80 million on a one-off period motion picture that doesn’t have a cape.”
As for Wonder Woman – which is both directed by a woman (Patty Jenkins) and stars one (Gal Godot) – Pine did talk a little bit about the experience.
He’s playing Steve Trevor, the military man and love interest who finds himself in the position of being saved by our Amazon-princess heroine. Pine also confirmed that, though Wonder Woman was first introduced as a World War II era superheroine, this one is set in the First World War.
“Steve Trevor is a rogue-ish, cynical realist who’s seen the awful brutish nature of modern civilization,” Pine said. “He’s a worldly guy, a charming guy and it’s going to be a great, fun film. There are some incredibly deep, interesting and morally relevant themes.
“Patty is just directing the daylights out of it. It’s shot beautifully feels so wonderfully period, but also has this wonderful pop sensibility.”
As for the Great War setting, he said, “it’s a period we don’t see often; it’s usually World War II. Our costume design is incredible. We have scenes with, like, 500 extras all in period dress. I’d never been on a film with extras casting as beautifully done as it is here.
“It highlights a really important point. When background casting is done well, it can make or break a scene. I’ve got people in deep background that have entire lives. It’s awesome, it’s actual make-believe land.”
As for his other franchise, Pine downplayed the reaction to the first trailer for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond (directed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin). The fast-paced, manically-cut snippet, complete with Beastie Boys soundtrack, apparently surprised co-writer Simon Pegg, who suggested it wasn’t an accurate representation of the movie. Fans speculated Lin’s Trek would be The Fast and the Furious in space.
“I don’t cut together the trailers,” Pine said. “It’s obviously put together by people who have their own ideas. It’s business and we want people to see our film.” That said, he added, “It (the movie) is fast and fun though.
Asked if the trailer accurately reflects the movie, he said, “I’m not saying it does or doesn’t. It’s one version. There are going to be many more trailers.”
