After performing seven shows at Allphones Arena in their hometown supporting One Direction in 2013, 5 Seconds of Summer took to the stage on Saturday night (with a distinct lack of pyrotechnics), but this time it was their name on the top of the bill.
If that arena wasn’t sold out I’ll eat my giant 5SOS foam finger. Every seat of every row was packed to the brim with energetic teenagers, phones at the ready to catch every moment of the concert through their real and technological eyes. After an intense countdown the band appeared from behind drummer, Ashton Irwin’s, kit to a cacophony of screams.

As the show began with ‘End Up Here’, it was clear that this seated arena was very quickly turning into a standing-room only moshpit. The level of enthusiasm could be felt right down to your feet, literally. Not only was everyone singing along to every lyric, they were jumping with such energy that at times the bleachers felt, instead, like trampolines.

Throughout the show each member of the band - Michael, Luke, Ashton and Calum - took it in turns to profess their thanks to the crowd for their support over the last four years. You could hear the collective ‘aww’ throughout the crowd, with everyone’s hearts melting a little bit inside. That wasn’t the only thing they had a chat about on stage.

They also reminded everyone of just how young they are and how far they’ve come in the little time they’ve spent playing together. Copping some flack from the other guys, lead vocalist Luke Hemmings shared with everyone how he has marked the changes over the past four years - when they started the band as teenagers he couldn’t grow a mustache, now his facial hair game is strong. Just before diving into ‘Long Way Home’, Hemmings once again got a bit nostalgic by sharing a bit more of the band’s history. Sure, everyone knows the band grew up in Western Sydney, but did you know their first ever gig was at the iconic Annandale Hotel? From a gig to twelve people to a gig of 21,000 in four years is not bad at all.

The night wasn’t all about them showing off their music skills either. Halfway through ‘Rejects’, the band announced that someone else would be joining them on stage to play the next part of their song. Low and behold out of the crowd comes drummer Irwin’s 11 year old brother, ready to shred it out front in front of 21,000 people. Keep an eye out, there may very well be a 5SOS 2.0 coming soon.
One thing that definitely stood out during the concert was the fact that although there might be four boys (well, closer to men now) in the band, it definitely doesn’t make them a ‘boyband’ as such. They’ve said before they reject that label because of the connotations it comes with - manufactured and generic sound. They couldn’t be further in the opposite direction. By playing their own instruments, writing, singing and harmonising their own songs (including the drummer - talk about multi-talented) and putting on one hell of a performance, they buck the trend and prove that their music is worth every accolade it gets. On top of that (and while you wouldn’t necessarily notice this at first) they’re introducing a new generation to songs that may have been lost otherwise. Although hearing an arena full of teenage girls scream the words to Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ was unbelievably bizarre, it was an awesome thought that legendary songs like it aren’t being lost to the mass of the Internet. You can thank 5SOS for bringing back The Romantic’s classic ‘What I Like About You’ too, which was met with a deafening noise as the band played it to close out the show.
