Chapter 10 – Bad Anastasia

The seterusnya day, she had to go to school early. Her mother worked as a T.A in the high school, and on that Friday morning she had to make breakfast for the other teachers assistants. Anastasia wanted to take advantage of being early to greet Daniel as he would walk by.
So, in the nearly empty hallway, she put her backpack down and sat on the floor. She tried to relax, but somehow it was not possible. She was very nervous, but at the same time her attention was focused. She did not want to be distracted and miss Daniel when he walked by.
She waited about ten lebih minutes, standing up this time. Slowly, lebih and lebih teenagers passed her sejak as the high school was getting ready for the day. But, none of the students that walked sejak her were Daniel.
After a little while, finally he was going to walk by. His eyes were ahead of him, and he did not see the girl to the side of the hallway waiting for him. She took a few steps forward, and opened her mouth to speak, but it was like she did not have a voice box. Everything that she planned on telling him paraded into her mind all at once, and she knew that if she were going to talk to him, it would sound lebih like, “Uh duhhhhhh”. So, she let him pass her by. She told herself that she would get the chance later.
The saat time he walked by, Peter was walking with him again. She couldn’t walk up to him then, either. Once again, she did not wish to have lebih attention than what was necessary.
When she went to tell Cathy about what had happened a minit later, Cathy was disappointed that she had failed.
“Bad Anastasia!” she scolded. She crumbled up an orange piece of paper in her hands and threw it at her. It landed softly in her lap.
“I’m sorry!” Anastasia apologized and she picked up the advertisement and thrust it back at her friend. “I wish I could go back in time now, I really do. But too many things were rushing in my head at once, and the seterusnya time he went sejak he was with a friend. I couldn’t do anything then.”
“Whatever,” Cathy muttered, but her usual joking tone was present in her voice. “Just, whatever.”

Monday and Tuesday of seterusnya week were similar to Friday. They were fuzzy days when it came to trying to meet him, but on the night of Tuesday, Anastasia was furious. She was running out of time. Everyday that passed she was a hari closer to her Sweet Sixteen, and further away of the chances that Daniel could come.
Tuesday night she promised herself that the seterusnya hari she would not chicken out. The seterusnya day, she was going to go up to him and say, “Hey. Are anda the guy who Kevin showed my novel to last week?” and was not going to think about it too much. She was extremely determined at that moment, and she hoped that her determination was going to last.
Also on that Tuesday, her sister came utama talking about an assembly that she had that hari that lasted for two periods. Anastasia knew that she was going to have this assembly the seterusnya hari also. Her sister explained to her all of the main parts of the assembly, and told her that some people cried at the stories that the man told. Even though her sister talked about it too much, she was glad that her sister told her that the speaker was going to have all of the students say “You’re beautiful” to each other. When she told her this, Anastasia had to turn her head away so that her sister and her mother (who was also in the room with them) wouldn’t see her cry. All her life, whenever she looked into the mirror, she was always everything but beautiful. In her mind, she was ugly on some days, average on others, and maybe on one of her good days she would admit that she didn’t look so bad. She didn’t know where this insecurity came from, either. A couple of her peers in the past had told her that she was average looking, and maybe her unsuccessful “love life” also made her think this way about herself. Her mother told her sometimes that she was beautiful, and maybe once in a while a few Rawak people told her mother that she had “beautiful girls”. But the thought that she was truly beautiful had never sunk into her mind before. To have the people in school call her beautiful unexpectedly would be too overwhelming. So presently she was glad that she had an idea of what was to come in the seterusnya day.
