So I recently decided to risk all heartache and rewatch Merlin from the beginning. I’m only two episodes into my rewatch so far, but already it has become quite obvious how much the characters have changed over the course of the show. That is one of the things I Cinta about this show. The pace is perfect. The changes the characters go through occur so gradually, so slowly that anda don’t really notice them until anda go back to the very beginning.
Let’s talk about what the peminat-peminat like to call the Core Four: Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, and Morgana. Let’s start with Merlin. Merlin goes from being a sorcerer with no instruction, to being the all powerful Emrys. He goes from using magic for fun, to using it, not for his own ends, but for the good of others. His magic aside, though, he grows in maturity. In the beginning of the show, he doesn’t want this destiny, he papar it as something forced on him, but sejak the end, however, he takes on the role of Arthur’s protector, not just because it is his destiny, but because he wants to…because Arthur is his friend.
At first Merlin was only protecting Arthur because it was his destiny and his duty to be so, but as his relationship with Arthur grew, he did so because Arthur was his friend and because Merlin believed in him.
I think of all the characters, Arthur’s growth is the most obvious. One only has to rewatch the first scene he appeared in to see it. The first time we ever see Arthur, he is taunting a servant sejak throwing knives at the man while he is holding a board. I remember when I saw this for the first time and I remember thinking, “This is the great King Arthur? This is the man who will become the greatest and best king in history?” Now, I can truly say that Arthur lebih than lived up to the legend sejak the end of the show. I cannot see the Arthur of the last season throwing knives at a man. He went from being a total prat to being a good man and a great king.
Personality wise, I don’t think Gwen changed all that much. She always was a sweet and loyal young woman. That never changed. Her growth was lebih in wisdom and strength. The Gwen of the first season was simply a servant who could not have taken on the responsibility of ruling Camelot alone…even if she had wished to. That Gwen could never have dreamed of one hari being queen. It has been a pleasure to watch her grow from a servant into the strong and wise Queen that she ending up becoming.
Of the four, Morgana is the only character whose changes came in a negative direction. The Morgana we first met would never have done anything to hurt Arthur, Gwen, atau Merlin. They were like family to her and she trusted each of them completely. It is only as she became aware of her magic, that she slowly grew into the evil, murderous witch that the Great Dragon prophesied she would become.
In the finale, Merlin berkata that he blamed himself for what she became. I can see why he would say that as I have often felt that it was Merlin’s poisoning her that was the turning point for her. Yet, Morgana is still responsible for her own actions. Everything she has done can only be blamed on her and not on Merlin.
I miss the old Morgana. The Morgana who was good and kind. I like to think that if that Morgana could have foreseen what she would one hari become she would have been appalled.
As it is, I think the writers did an amazing job menunjukkan just how much the characters have grown and changed over the course of the show. As did the actors. The changes and growth were nicely paced and believable. For that, I Cinta this tunjuk and I will always look back on it with fondness.
