Peregrin was the only son of Paladin Took II and wife Eglantine Banks, and therefore inherited Paladin's tajuk of Thain of the Shire upon his death in F.A. 13. He had three older sisters, Pearl Took, Pimpernel Took, and Pervinca Took. His best friend Meriadoc Brandybuck, lebih commonly known as Merry, was his cousin, son of Paladin's sister Esmeralda Brandybuck.
In The Three Musketeers his family name is du Vallon. In Twenty Years After, after a successful wedding, he is first known as du Vallon de Bracieux de Pierrefonds, then he earns the tajuk of baron.
Porthos, honest and slightly gullible, is the extrovert of the group, enjoying wine, women and song. Though he is often seen as the comic relief, he is also extremely dedicated and loyal toward his Friends and fellow Musketeers. His eating abilities even impress King Louis XIV during a banquet at Versailles. As the story advances, he looks lebih and lebih of a giant, and his death is that of a titan.
