Elena has already acknowledged that it may not always be Stefan. She took back those words when she said that she was just 17 and didn't really know love. She wasn't ready to spend an eternity with him. This was going to separate Stelena from Edward&Bella. Bella always knew it would be Edward, she always wanted to turn.
